I'm working on a 1990 7.3 IDI which has a bad lift pump. I should have known better, but I bought a pump from O'Reilly, it is the "precision pump" brand. Anyways, I put the pump on, got the truck running, cut it off the night. The next day went to try to start and it wouldn't. Found out no fuel was coming from the pump, checked everything, found out the new lift pump isn't working. Pull it off and verified it is not pumping. I can't think of anything I could have done wrong. Anyone recommend another brand? Carter maybe? Thanks

Can you post some numbers of the pump? flow? Pressure? I think most of those off the shelf pumps are not rated for Diesel and have only a few PSI.
If you want a good pump, order a Duralift from that dude .... I can't remember his username. He's on FTE. Let me try and find him.
The Carter and Airtex pumps for this truck spec out exactly the same. In fact the pic for the Carter pump on RockAuto is exactly the same as that for the Precision Pump on oreilleyauto.com . The pump is made to physically fit the engine, with an arm length designed to interface with the cam lobe. Given that it's built to this purpose, it's unlikely that it's not rated for diesel, or that it's underrated to supply the IP.
Most likely an "infant mortality" part. Looks like O'Reilly has the Spectra pump for this application, SP1010MP , for a few dollars more. Dunno about the pumps, but Spectra's fuel tanks have a good reputation. Might be worth asking to look at each one on the bench out of the box, and if it looks like the Spectra is a superior product, get them to exchange it for the difference in price.
Above is right, no mechanical pump moves more than 3-4psi that ive ever seen except for like the holley red/blue mechanicals, and theyre like 5-6. 6psi is more or less the ideal pressure according to the pump stand.
