I own a 76 F-250 4x4 that I am doing a body off restoration. I have concern about the power assisted steering (suicide steering) What is the best route to take to fix this type of system and/ or is this style steering safe? The truck has front leaf springs. I have heard bad things about the style steering and just wanted some input. Thanks Rick
Thank you for the reply. What would be the right area to list this in? Today is my first day on the site and Im still learning the way things woek here. Thank you in advance for your help.
Your PA steering is totally safe IF (obviously) it is in good operating condition. I had a 77 F250 4x4 crewcab w/ PA. When I first got the truck the steering seemed okay, a little sloppy but not too bad and then...one day driving down the Deerfoot trail (our local high speed highway) at 65mph, the truck suddenly pulled to the right. There was absolutely nothing I could do to keep the truck on the road. I zoomed across three lanes of traffic and into the ditch. I got lucky that day! I rebuilt the PA (full rebuild kits are still available). I ran the truck for 12 years as my landscaping rig and other than blowing the occasional high pressure steering hose the PA worked well. Mattsbox99, I did look into installing a 78-79 setup on my truck and I thought there was some welding and fabricating involved, but I could be wrong (this was a few years ago) So the upshot is, as with all things mechanical, make sure it's in good condition and you won't have any problems.
