Trying to leave work in the '96 5.8 and it will not start, much less crank or even click. I can hear the fuel pump prime and the volt meter reads "normal" when in the KOEO position. No change with the jumper cables hooked up. No previous starting issues as of late either. I'm thinking lose ground or the relay on the fender is not working? Any input would be appreciated!
It's easy enough to bypass the relay on the fender, just run a metal jumper between the two large posts on the solenoid. Maybe the small wire that runs from the fender mounted relay to the starter is bad.
I had a similar issue and after replacing the solenoid on the RH fender,
I crawled under the truck and found that the wire that is to supply
the power to the starter solenoid, on the starter, had a faulty connector.
Repaired the connection and it cranked right up and has been fine for the
past two years. Give it a good visual and see if it has been overheated or
just in need of a new crimp on lug. Sounds like the starter control signal
is not energizing the solenoid below.
If it does not click it is NOT the crimp on lug at the starter solenoid on the starter.
Sounds like it might be the TR sensor on the drivers side of the transmission or the ignition switch on the column.
If it has a standard transmission then look at the switch on the clutch instead of the transmission TR sensor.
^ subford was close. Luckily, soon after I made the post, I went and felt any connections I could reach. All seemed snug, but still no crank. Ran the column shifter through the gears and back to park. Fired right up.
I was thinking just the other day, the shifter has too much play in it... Rookie mistake on my end.
I really appreciate the input guys. Paul, I need to clean my connections as a preventive measure soon.
Had the same exact issue in my bronco a few weeks ago. Shift thru the column and worked on mine too. Now when it acts up neutral will fire it off but not park. .
So this is not the neutral/park safety switch going bad? Or an adjustment on my tranny? . . but as easy as a few screws under the column?
Check the screws first and if they are tight then maybe you have a bad TR sensor (neutral/park safety switch) on the transmission or it is out of adjustment.
Yes there is, block the tires and put the transmission in neutral. Loosen the two screws and align the marks.
Note you may have to remove the shift lever to see the marks or use the alignment too. If you remove the shift lever be very careful not to break the shift shaft off when you take the nut off:
