Starting Problem, too

Hey all,

I am also having a starting problem with my rig, but the recent posts just aren't quite the same. I parked my truck Friday when getting home from work and didn't try to start it until Sunday. The glow plugs cycled and I got a heavy click from the starter solenoid, but the starter did not roll over. The batteries both read about 13V. I pulled the starter Monday and took it to the local AZ for testing; checks out fine. I picked up a new solenoid (four post, like original) put the truck together and tried to start. The wire from the small post one the inner fender to the starter (14ga.) fried all the insulation! I checked all the contacts and found nothing shorting at the inner fender or starter. I ran a new wire (12ga.) to the starter and now the starter turns in the "Run" position. I noticed that I crossed the "S" and "I" terminals on the new solenoid. I swapped the two small wires and am now back to the original problem of a heavy click at the solenoid, but the starter does not turn. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Ben

Check all the fusible links at the fender relay, there is a solenoid on the starter that is activated to throw the bendix, if the contacts are worn you may not be getting the starter motor power to the armature. A little tapping on the starter may help...... which starter is it .....mitsubishi they are the best.

Clutch interlock or starter switch not making good contact.
With the wheels blocked and the parking brake on withthe transmission in neutral try jumping from the positive battery terminal to the S terminal on the relay.
If it cranks OK that way you are looking for either a break in the start wire or the switch under the dash is not making good contact with the start position terminal.

My interlock also causes mine to click like that sometimes, I just let off the clutch and then put it back down and it cranks fine.

I just noticed the C6 in your signature, you still have a Park/Neutral safety interlock on the start system.

Thanks for the help guys. I just looked at your email this morning (Oct 17) Dave. I believe I found the problem last night. When I had opened the wiring harnes to see if any wires had melted/fused, I think I flip-flopped the trigger wires for the glow plug relay and starter solenoid upon reassembly. With the new solenoid and proper wiring, I was able to start the truck last night. Boy, if ignorance is bliss...

Thanks, again for your replies. I have them filed away for future reference.

Ben
