Metals and contaminants look excellent. You can definitely see the chemistry differences in the V's additive package (positive ones - more moly, titanium, and zinc...). However, the Valvoline seems to not be surviving the shear forces quite as well as the Rotella, but it's not a really significant difference at all.
One question I have, though... How many changes with the Valvoline had you been through before this sample was taken?
It typically takes three full changes to get the "new" oil brand completely in place and the "old" brand out of the engine. That being said, if you had made less than three changes, the chemistry differences would look even more starkly different that they already do. Again, not a bad thing, just a technical thing. However, if this was your first run on the Valvoline for this winter, you might actually see the viscosity difference get even smaller or go completely away once all the older Rotella has been purged.
This is what I meant about southern trucks.. It was clean 3 days ago until a trip to Shipshewana Indiana. From Northeast Nebraska and back. Rust Belt because of salt!
