rebuild kits

hello everyone. ive got a 78 f250 with a 400 in it. recently she went down with a bad rocker arm after a day trail riding. i replaced it got the knock out drove it down the road, the truck stalled fired back up made it back home and , the knock returned so im about to send the motor to a shop and repair it. i want to buy a rebuild kt myself so i can replace a few things from stock such as cam, timing chain. what are the best kits to buy? ive seen a few on ebay for around 250-300$ but those seem super cheap to me. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

For the most part as soon as you want to go away from stock you might as well forget a "kit".

Can you be more specific about what you want out of the motor? Do you want to leave the compression at 7.8:1 (or there about) or do you want to up that? What size cam are you thinking?

There are several different oil mods that can help redirect the oiling of these motors, some are with plugs and tmi has one that is revised cam bearings. If you choose to do one of these that may determine what cam bearings you choose.

Rings, rod and main bearings can be stock form to fit your crank (std or undersized) but there are lots of options beyond stock to choose too.

My suggestion is to get the best idea you can about what is out there and availible. If you then feel a "kit" is best you can go that way but I have a feeling you will end up buying most of the parts individually so you can get exactly what you want.

i was mainly tryin to stay some what around a stock build this time around. was looking at running a set of 351 4v closed heads, mild/rv cam ,and an unretarded timing setup(read awhile ago that the timing gear in my year motor is retarded and reatricts power) , aftermarket intake and 4 bbl carb. Ive never really done motor upgrades this is all strictly google and forum searched info ive gained. so if there is a better ay around things please feel free. this trucl is goin to continue to be a daily driver off road rig

If you look at some of the higher priced kits, $400, they are from what seam to be reputable shops and you can call them and get a custom "kit". They use quality name brand parts and will include what ever you want. I planned on new pistons and everything for mine so I can't really order until I have figured out if it needs bored or not.

You could always go to your local machine shop that you trust. If you haven't used one there before, talk to a local car club or a couple older gearheads and they will usually have some good advice on where to go. Walk in, tell them what you are looking for and what your budget is. They can usually advise you of a good direction, and can probably order in a nice combination of parts to get you what you're looking for.

read HIO silver's links....and then spend another week of your life reading more articles beyond that.

or

find a reputable shop, tell them what you want, they will tell you that you can't have all that because they are opposites, and then you can come to some middle road.

You will not need an adapter or conversion kit to install a 460. Motor mounts will work and transmission will bolt on. Will it just slide in? That depends, Is it a truck 460 or car 460, is it carburated or efi. It would not be any differnt than swapping in a different 400. As long as it came out of a similar truck, should be pretty straight forward.

awesome thank you. i may just go with that being as that was my original plan. ive read that the van 460s are best fit. ill be sure to ask the region of the motor before i purchase it. i also found an article an hour ago stating the 428 flywheel is best to use, as it shares the same tooth count as the 400. any input on this?

my understanding is that the tooth count is in relation to the transmission, and weight is in reference to motor. I think the biggest thing would be the oil pan, whether it is front or rear sump and what you need for your truck, and whether it has a mechanical fuel pump. Do a little reading here on 460's nad you should get the answers you need. Oil pans are different for 2wd and 4wd.

And those 351c closed chamber 4 bbl heads are great for a street car. Not worth a damn for a heavy *** truck. Unless you plan to spin it at 4500+

ive noticed alot of people do the rear sump. ive got a front sump now and it got banged up a little after i put it on. since the lift was put in it hasnt seemed to touch the pumpkin. if there is a clearance dfference in the 460 vs the 400 ill order the rear sump setup. thank you for the advice. ill keep readin up got a coyple weeks till i male my purchase.
