another 460 swap
Not new to FTE , but its been a few years since I was active so I started a new accnt. Still have my 78 but I'm rebuilding it. No longer my daily driver so a 460 seems like a good idea.
I know this has been done and I know I've ran into a few issues so far. So I wanted to start a thread and possibly get some help when needed And put what I run into out here for the next guy.
Snatched the 351m a few years ago and bought a mud truck for a donor. It had a not original 460, questionable "newly rebuilt" c6 with fresh paint, no transfer case, and was kind of a rolling chassis. Fired up on a gatoraid bottle of gas and found good oil pressure and no horrible knocks. Painted the engine, bought motor swap mounts, modified the cross member to access the oils drain, and dropped it in. After a ten minute test drive I slowly lost oil pressure.
Further investigation ran 2 dead cyl on comp check, and obviously some loose bearings. Foward about 2years I'm finally financially ready to finish this swap. The new parts are on on the table, truck is in the yard, and moneys in the bank to order a new engine. Checked local machine shop and priced long blocks. Going to buy a long block from auto parts and immediately void the warranty with a bad A camshaft. Due to not knowing where the 460 came from, I'll have to pull it and run the numbers before I can order one. Did this one time and came back a pre'74 car engine? I think.

While I was looking for motor mounts( I finally found) and headers ( after talking to hooker and a few others I've gave up on their existance) I found that swapping into a 4x4 would be a lot easier. Or an f150 for that matter
And exhaust, the mud truck came with long tubes. No way in H to make them fit so I had to search all over for stock manifolds. And the car and truck manifolds are totally different and only one style fits.
I guess one day I'll fork out the 1ooo or whatever it costs for custom headers

You can use factory pieces to bolt a 460 into a '65-'79 2wd truck, F-100 through F-250. Really no need for special swap mounts.
And for headers, several companies offer application specific headers for a 460 into a 70's F-series. I have used Hedman on multiple occasions with good results.
And roger. Hedman was the other I contacted along with hooker and they both told me I was SOL
79FordBlake. . that is some purdy blue paint on there. What did you use? An has it held up? Mainly on heads. I'm going to run those chrome valve covers and an alum intake this time. My only blue will be the block and heads
The paint is duplicolor. I just got the engine in last Friday but I've been keeping it hot( running and driving it everyday). It also ran a lot before I got it in on a engine stand. The looks of the paint hasn't changed any so I think its going to hold up well.
I decided to keep the stock 4 barrel cast iron intake. Supposed to have better low end with it. I also installed a double roller edelbrock timing set and set it at (0). The engine is stock other than the timing chain and edelbrock carb. Sure does have a ton of torque though. Moves the '78 Bronco easily. Big upgrade from the 351M it had.
I have used the Hedman 89840 Elite and the 89146 HTC on several installs and never had an issue. I prefer the Elite due to it's heavier tubing and thicker flanges.
Perhaps Hedman has discontinued the listing, but as of this morning it is still shown on the Summit site.
Hooker used to offer a 460 header that worked with their engine swap kits only. No guarantees it would fit with any other mounts.
Hope this helps.
Blake I went with the summit racing engine paint. And I'm going to brush it on, my aresol overhaul did not work on my last engine swap. The reason I asked about the mounts was I saw a guys signature (maybe here or on the bronco forum) where he was basically saying how stupid people were for solid on engine and rubber on tranny. I haven't researched the possibility for damage though.
Made progress this morning guys..
.
Please Help!! Anyone know what year this is so I can order my new one.
Heads are d0ve-a2a . Block is d1ve-a2b
