I drove my truck to the store this morning (a 95 f150 xlt 5.8L 351w) and went to drive to work from there and wouldn't start, had power lights, radio, and fans all come on but the engine won't even make a sound in trying to start. So I left it at the store till I can get it towed home . My wife was gunna try and see if it would start when she got off work. Could it just be the starter? And are those pretty easy to change on these trucks?
thanks for any suggestions.
If it does not make a sound when the key is turned then it is not the starter.
The starter relay on the fender should make a clicking sound each time you turn the key.
So from that it would seem to be a problem with either the ignition switch, the NSS or the starter relay on the fender.
What is the NSS? Not yet familar with all the initials yet sorry. Ok I'll have to see if I can hear the clicking I was kind of in a hurry to get to work. Which side is the relay on or which fender? now if I hear the clicking it's the starter? Sorry for all the questions still new to working on my truck kind of why i got it so I can tinker. Thanks for you promote reply.
Make sure truck is in park or neutral. Turn key on. Pull small red wire off solenoid . Jump from battery to terminal that the red wire was on if truck starts. Drive it home and check out neutral start switch. If doesn't even click when you do this the the solenoid on the fender is suspect. If it clicks but doesn't try to start the solenoid on starter or stater is suspect
Well I went back to the truck after work I do hear a click every time I turn the key.
Then it is either the starter relay on the passenger fender that you hear making the clicking noise or the starter or a bad spade connector at this point.
Take a test light and put it on the small red wire going from the starter relay to the starter. If it lights when it clicks it is more than likely the spade connector. Wiggle the spade connector at the starter solenoid down on the starter. If it starts now cut off the spade and about one inch of wire and crimp on a new spade and push it back on.
If wiggling the spade did not help hit the start with a hammer as you have someone turn the key. If it starts now or tries to start it is a bad starter.
