Key on no cranking

Hi guys,

i know there are lots of posts already about this kind of problem but i'd like to get some more ideas before taking down the starter.

With the key on i don't get any cranking. starter doesn't move.

I had a new starter reali kicking around so i put it on. checked with my voltmeter and it gets power from the batteries.

turning the keys i can hear it clicking but when i go to make the final turn the starter doesn't move.

it all started a couple of days ago when the cable from the ignition switch kept falling off..

I thought it was going to be the same problem this time but when i opened the hood it was still on.
Later i tried to start the angine a couple of time and heard a weird noise coming from the starter relay. i was confidenti that the relay was the problem.

Changed it, double checked all the wires but nothing..

tried to tap the starter with a deadblow hammer and later a steel hammer. no success.

any ideas guys?

There's a wire that connects the starter to the start solonoid (big fat one .. held on with a nut) ..

The first thing i would check is that this hadn't backed off and still has good contact ..

when i jumped the relay nothing happened. that's why i started to think my starter went.

sounds like it. i would get down under the truck and check for power at the starter itself when someone turns the key to start position. if you have power there, i would pull hte starter.

FIRST thing to check is whether you can turn the engine by hand. Also LOAD test the batteries, and check all main battery power/ground connections.

Switch on the clutch pedal or transmission sometimes prevents the starter from engaging.

^^^^^ Jumping the relay bypasses the neutral/clutch safety lockout switch. If it doesn't crank when jumping the relay, the lockout (whichever applies) isn't in the picture.
