Colored LEd's

With all the talk of LED's in the passenger compartment I was wondering if anyone has done red units in the back for the kids to use and still preserve night vision? Just a thought, my main concern is LED's are just to bright in general.

Having spent more than a few nights on the open ocean with the red lights on, I have always wondered why this type of feature was not used on cars. It would be interesting to see if you could make it work, especially if there was a way to be able to switch between red and white...

I was thinking the map lights with the switches in the back for my boys while I'm driving. With younger ones also, I'm thinking all interior overheads to keep the littles from waking up when opening the doors.

Green is also a color option to go with. The only reason I suggest it is some local cops might be jerks about the red lights. All it takes is one cop having a bad night looking for one little thing...

I use to own a caprice which was a former police car. In the map lights they had red bulbs in them. I guess to be able to see and read but not blinding, distracting while driving or to not be seen. I'm not sure if the led ones would be too bright but I think it would work.

FWIW when I was really into Datsuns the really hard thing to find was yellow headlights. Apparently they made them at one point 30 years ago but you can't get them now. What the guys on the forums were doing (with great success) was using Testers brand model paint on stock glass headlights and doing coats and coats and somehow it stays on and looks AWESOME!

I have also done something similar. I have a 04 yukon xl denali and the factory tail lights have a yellow turn signal lens on top. I used the testers red transparent paint from hobby lobby on the outside of lens and it has held up for 4+ years.
