I've got a 76 f250 390, recently replaced alternator due to charging issue, while plowing I the main wire from the alternator to solenoid heated up and burnt about 8 inches. Replaced the wire, voltage regulator and solenoid. And is now charging around 17 volts to the guage and battery. And continues to increase the longer the truck runs. WHATS THE ISSUE !!!!!
Sounds like voltage regulation is non functional. You should see 14.2 - 14.5 max. Don't run it like that! 17 volts will cook the battery and other stuff pretty fast.
First step is to visually check wiring and connections. Check the smaller wires to the alternator and regulator for any damage. After that, personally, I would replace the voltage regulator making sure there is clean metal around the screws or behind the case for good ground. Check again. Its also possible the alternator has a problem... reman alternators seem a bit iffy. The parts store can usually do a running test for you.
If that does not work, deeper check is needed. Step by step troubleshooting of the VR circuit with a multi meter has been posted.
swap in a 3G alternator and be done with it. a lot less wires, more power to run what you need...more reliable in my opinion. the swap also saves time down the road so you're not chasing your tail on troubleshooting...and its cost effective as far as parts and maintenance once the install is complete.
