My blowing blue smoke issue has turned up no codes or "problems". However, we are looking at another angle. I told him that before the blue smoke starts spewing, I get a metallic clatter/rattle sound from the engine on acceleration (I told them that the last time I took it in).
I was two quarts low on oil when they were doing all the tests. I never let it get that low. Service manager said "blue smoke indicates oil". Duh!
Could be blow bye from crankcase oil getting past the piston.
So I havta run it about 500 miles and see if oil level drops.
I also told them to google "6.4L blue smoke" when he has nothing to do. Loads of posts on all the diesel sites. And a you tube video thru the back window of a truck of a smokescreen. That's what mine does!!
I told him Ford has known about this since 2007/08.
He said mine is the first they've encountered at their dealership. Will see.
Mine doesn't do it at idle. The past couple times I've taken it out, on acceleration, I get this metallic clattering/rattle sound for a couple seconds and then blue smoke out the tailpipe. I'm wondering if its an injector or piston rings? I'm logging mileage, location and timing each time this happens. I found a couple diesel repair places near me, so I'm going to visit them tomorrow and ask questions.
Mine blows blue smoke when its idling but only when temp outside is cold?
Blue smoke at idle during warm up is pretty much normal - at least in our northern climate. It should go away once your engine is at operating temperature. However it may continue if the engine is under no significant load and temperatures are cold enough (-20 C or lower). The engine is dumping fuel to keep warm.
Well, its been 550 miles since the episodes of blue smoke. Have had no episodes in that time. Might have been bad fuel. After thinking about it, I looked at my fuel receipts and timing, I got fuel both times at that station (although I've been buying at that place for over 3 years). After the last "blue smoking"episode, I changed gas stations and it hasn't occurred since. Not totally convinced of my logic, but will keep a close eye on things.
