Lately my 6 disk indash CD player in my 03 expy has been displaying a cd error message. And when you try to add a cd it will say all slots full. Now here is the funny thing there are no discks in it. It also won't switch from one disk to another
I have one of those is my '05, I think they are not too different. From what I can find online, they're not too reliable and are somewhat prone to break. You can either buy a new radio, or a new CD changer mechanism, or upgrade to an aftermarket unit. Ebay has all of these, if you opt for the cheapest solution to buy a new mechanism, you need to match the part number very precisely. You can also send in your mechanism and have it serviced, if you're able to open it and remove the mechanism, the radio will work just fine while you send the mechanism in for service. It's pretty easy to take out the CD mechanism from the radio.
Ok thanks I plan on taking it apart this weekend. If I go the aftermarket radio route what do I need in order to still use my steering wheel controls and also to hook the factory sub back up
Search on ebay for a 2DIN conversion kit, the '03 didn't use any fancy CANBUS communication for the steering wheel controls, so there's many radios that will support that without much hassle. Personally I am going to get one of the Android head units from Ebay, but I think there's lots other aftermarket stereos that supports steering wheel controls out of the box. For the subwoofer, it's just a matter of hooking up the audio signal and the remote signal to turn it on from what I can tell. The OEM head unit gives out 5V on the remote wire, while aftermarket units puts out 12V, so you'll need a resistor. According to what I read, the 12V on remote wont damage the OEM amp, but it will cause the subwoofer to pop when turning on and stuff, and a resistor will prevent that.
This is at least valid for a '05, so you may have to check for the '03. I don't think they're much different on the audio systems though.

Consider it a mercy killing. The 6-disc changers are complete junk. It's a great time to upgrade to a Nav system. Crutchfields has all the info and helps with installation guides. I put a Pioneer 940BT in mine when it died. I've been enjoying the upgrade for years now. You can get the steering wheel kit and rear DVD player harness along with the system at Crutchfields. The '03s are an easy upgrade project.
