My '98 XLT had the stock radio/cassette stereo & I'd tried for awhile to find 1 of the radio/cassette/CD units for it w/o luck. Today I found a stock radio/CD player in a Thrift Store for $1! Compared to the pristine original stereo w/only 13,XXX miles on it, this CD player looked beat up, having conspicuous wear on the buttons & face. However I couldn't resist giving it a try. Against all odds apparently every function works as it should, although at 1st I thought it was DOA. Turned out it wouldn't accept a CD b/c it had a disc in it. Now all I need to find is an el cheapo dead unit w/pretty face & switch face plates.
From the CD player's worn appearance & my understanding of mathematical probability IMO its most likely that this OEM unit was replaced w/an aftermarket stereo. The odds of it being "stolen" & donated to a Humane Society Thrift Store are fairly remote, "but oh well its your" opinion.
Just saying because i dont know how much of a hurry a person would be to leave a cd in it. Regardless it doesnt matter, good job on finding a deal man.
Since BURNSTOUGHFORD enjoyed the "$1 CD Player" so much, he's just going to love this story. Today, just hours after the $1 Thrift Store CD player proved itself, I found a 4th Gen 16GB ipod on the ground in a busy parking lot by I75! One of the ear 'buttons' had been stepped on or run over, but still works. Called Best Buy & asked if there's a way to find the owner via the S/N & they thought I was nutz. The battery went down while I was going thru it to see if I could find any ID. It was playing when I picked it up. Maybe this ipod was also "stolen" & fumbled by the thief? May become a case of Finders Keepers & "oh well its (mine) now" might apply? Not sure what efforts I should make to try & locate the owner? Photos on it were not taken in FL, may very well have been an interstate traveler. Wasn't going to leave it w/some slacker clerk at 1 of the businesses. Is there a Lost & Found on Craigslist? Maybe god wants me to listen to more music? Looked this ipod up on fleabay & somebody won 1 used in VG cond for $168!
Thanks for posting another baseless assumption. I'd have absolutely no reason to presume anyone was in "much of a hurry".

In fact the CD was an unlabeled write/rewrite disc that has a nasty spot of corrosion near the edge & may very well been left in the player for years. I fully agree that you just "dont know". Yes, my $1 gamble turned out to be a "good job" if only b/c it pays for a couple of cans of pet food for Humane Society dependants.
Of course you weren't "questioning (my) integrity" just suggesting I "probably" possess "stolen" property. What I possess is a HS receipt for the "$1 CD Player". Its taped to the unit next to the HS price sticker.

i wasn't questioning your integrity
Not even by telling me to "Take a chill pill man". I don't possess "Take" or need anything vaguely like "a chill pill man". Not to Q "your integrity" but do you "Take a chill pill" often?
Had sumptuous fresh (gigged myself) Southern flounder & from the field sweet corn for supper. The "$1 CD Player" & iPod Nano 16 GB essentially falling out of the sky rounded out a fairly happy day for me. I was amazed every function worked on the old CD player. Sorry to see that you seem distressed today.
I did that before. Removed a stereo and installed a new one then realized I forgot to remove a cd. I was lucky enough to have a power supply and was able to power up the unit on the bench and eject the disc.
Nice find Club Wagon. For a $1, you can't go wrong. I sold a am/fm/cd/cassette unit for $50 last year. Keep looking, they are out there, just try to find one from a truck. The Explorer ones do not have good bass response in the trucks if they have the optional AMP. plug in the rear.
I can't make any claim about being "good" but was certainly lucky. Have invested some time trying to find the rightful owner of the $200 iPod. Talked w/Apple & they were no help, wouldn't even tell me what retailer sold it & apparently the owner never registered it according to S/N.

No idea if the owner was "good" or not, but am pretty sure by now they realize losing a 16GB Nano was a bad thing. Looks like I'm stuck w/it & will order accessories so I can recharge & download. Have mixed emotions about Finders Keepers, particularly b/c of the pics & an iPod was very far down on my list of wants/needs. Should have played Lotto, also found a 'Wheat Penny' in change.
Just a question here, seeking to make things clear about finding the iPod... did you talk to the local cops about finding the original owner of it? I'm not saying that I have never went the route of "finders keepers", but I'm thinking if I had lost a high-dollar piece of equipment like that, I would have reported it to the local Five-0.
As for the $1 CD player... hey, a receipt for it says you bought it on the up & up in my book. And if ya wanna get rid of the truck's original cassette player for that amount, I know where you can send it.
Thanks for the suggestion, but you obviously have a lot more faith in your "local Five-O" than I do. I survived a beating during a Home Invasion Robbery, but the police & insurance SOBs were even worse.

In a town w/~50,000 UF students famous for their rating as a Party School & a hard pressed police dept making news for claiming excess OT while diddling local prozzies, I doubt they have the resources to concern themselves w/a lost iPod? Afterall, these tiny devices seem to be very easy to lose. Saw an iPod go down in the ocean, along w/several cell phones.
With BURNSTOUGHFORD's "probably stolen" in mind, I wonder if the iPod's owner might've "reported it to the local Five-O" as stolen? I can only guess how the iPod came to be on the ground where I found it. Last week a local man reported his son kidnapped in order to amp up police activity searching for his stolen motorcycle-don't ask. He got arrested for filing a false report, subsequent investigation revealed another MC in his garage, reported stolen by his ex.
I'm satisfied that I tried to get Apple's help. Had the owner registered the iPod's S/N they could've helped. The owner also could've entered ID in the device, Geek Squad checked, or on it's case, but did not. Good advice is to always register "a high-dollar piece of equipment like that" ASAP.
Sorry, no, don't want to "get rid of" the original cassette stereo for $1.
