Ok so I drove my truck to a store about 10 miles away, and on the way back home, I was probably a mile from the house, my transmission got stuck into 4th gear... the shifter would NOT come out of gear. So I have to hold the clutch down and get pulled home. Well when I got home it freed up and I was able to drive and shift normally. This happened again, this time a waited and heard a metal clank sound from the transmission and it came right out of gear. Today I took the top plate off and the 1-2 gear shifting fork is worn down to nothing, but the 3-4 looks fine... I'm stumped. Please help.
The forks get worn down from driving with your hand on the shifter, applying pressure to the forks. There is not enough lubrication and the material is too soft and it wears down to nothing.
I just fixed up one that the 3-4 fork was paper thin. It was on a short road to not shifting.
I'm guessing the shifter detents were bound up(in the lid) and thus not allowing you to pull it out of 4th gear. You can buy the forks and they are simple to replace. Knock the roll pin out of the rod and then smack it out the end of the lid(after it pops the freeze plug out). Replace fork and reassemble.
Thanks yea my fork is worn pretty bad. I don't know much about transmissions at all, so I don't know where to begin trying to tell if the detents are bad, could you give me a link of a picture or something? And this has been pretty repetitive, it locks into 4th every time I drive it for a while. I've noticed that it has only happened when down shifting from 5th, never shifting from 3rd. Not sure exactly what the detent does or if it will cause this.
