hi I have had a sound coming from my rig(front)onlywhen in 4x4regardless of hubs in or out. the best way I can describe it is a wash boardy type sound that gets louder under throttle .im a back yarder so I know a little about a lot. iv replaced the hubs and checked for play in u joints and they seem to be fine but what I did find is quite a bit of (upndown) play at the slip joint say 1/8 inch of movement. the rear shaft has 0 play at the joint so I would assume the front shouldn't either? so my question is am I on the right track to finding my noise? thanks for your kindness in advanced
ok here is the run down of tests iv done so everyone is on the same page #1 4x2 unlocked hubs (no sound)#2 4x2 locked hubs (no sound)#3 4x4 unlocked hubs (sound) #4 4x4 hubs locked (sound) hope this helps thanks again
What year and how many miles on this rig?
Pull the front shaft. My bet is you will find one or more of the UJoints is shot. If so do all 3 joints. Use Spicers and use Spicers grease from here on out as the replacements will have zerks. If you have a Fleet Pride in your area they can assess the slip and Cardan joint if your unsure and rebuild the shaft for you at a reasonable cost. Insist on Spicer.
your looking at an 03 250 with 85k on the clock... I live in the "rust belt" so things tend to wear out pretty quickly due to the rust... im going to pull the shaft so I can assess the joints I had someone else recommend the u joints im guessing with just the hubs locked there isn't any binding on the shaft as it spins to cause any noise and when I switch to 4x4 it puts "pressure" on the shaft and the bad joint or joints is showing its self
They can present several different failure modes when they are on their way out or completely shot. My 08s front shaft joint started to vibrate at 55. Pulled the shaft and it was bound up nicely. Ive also learned to take the truck out for a short ride in 4wd after a vigorous chassis wash. I try not to direct water at the ujoints. My theory is it will eject the water that may be attempting to wick in verses if I just let it sit. Seems to be working with the 11 so far.
I here you I have a feeling im going to to have a bunch of little problems show up soon just due to the salt/rust my cab corners and doors already have cancer just about everything under my truck is nice n rusty makes it hell to work on
Ya these trucks just are not built to withstand any kind of corrosive/wet conditions. You have to do rust prevention from new. Even then you'll get maybe 10 years out of it. I tried the Krown treatment on this one. But it was 2yrs old when we did it. It had slight surface rust here and there but overall pretty clean. Jury's still out. See how it does this spring. I wash the hell out of it too. Today's cars are different as most of the undercarriages are shrouded with plastic and what isn't is smooth to not allow build up verses these trucks which catch and hold all the debris. I understand built in obsolescence but it'd sure be nice to get 5-6 years out of one before it falls apart. I need to invent something that melts ice, is neutral to metal and is at a similar coat to salt, dreamer. Friend has a 2010 lifted F350 CC in Phoenix. He plans on having it for 20 years. Guess where Im moving as soon as humanly possible.
