Ok i Have a 1986 F150 efi 5.0 4 speed 4x4. recently i needed to use the 4x4 and it wouldn't work i looked under the truck and the drive shaft to the front diff was rotating i couldnt really see the axleshafts good enough to see if they were turning or not, i know the hubs were locked in cause i unlocked them and relocked them to make sure they were. So my question is what might possibly be wrong? i dont think the splines on the axles could be striped off cause i'm sure i would've heard some grinding noises if they were so this leaves me with the lockouts. is it possible for them to just wear out over time? if so id like to get some better ones what would you guys suggest. any other opinions on what might be wrong
Bad hubs are a possibility. With the truck off and parked, lock the hubs and reach under and see if you can turn the axle shaft. If the shaft turns, the hub is most likely not working. I've always had good luck with Warn hubs.
Was the truck stuck or rolling when the shaft was turning? Try this. Transfer case in 2wd hubs locked try to turn the front shaft if it turns look the wheel joints are one or both turning? If the drive shaft is turning but the wheel joints aren't you have diff problems. If one or both of the wheel joints are turning and the hubs are locked you have a hub problem(only takes one to not engage and you don't have 4wd) If you don't use it often and it worked last time its probably just stuck and can be fixed by pulling hub cleaning and lubing. If nothing turns put hubs in free and transfer 4wd if you can turn the front shaft you have transfer case problems. Factory ford hubs are about as strong as any after market ones and it sounds like yours are just stuck. You should use your 4wd at least once a month, even if you just pull up and down your drive.
