Rear end ?

I'm not interested in pulling a trailer. I just want to be able to take off without burning up the clutch. I'm thinking about a 3.25 or a 3.00. What do you guys think?

3.25 to 3.50 is a good compromise btwn coming outta the hole and highway RPMs.

... but if it'' more long distance driving ya do then I'd opt for the 3.25.

Six cylinder trucks, 240/300, often have 3.50 or 3.70 rear end gears. My '69 F100 has a 240 with 3.50 gears.

The truck is your and the choice is your but, it would be better to add an overdrive transmission than to chunk the current 'chunk.'

I suggest keeping the rear that you have and start looking for an OD tranny that would allow you to keep what you have on take off but drop the Rs on the hiway.

Out of the 2 mentioned 3.25 for a 6 banger.

If you are burning up the clutch that problem is in the clutch not the rear.

3.00/3.25 would be a higher gear ration than the 3.70 making takeoff harder, not easier. Either you are wrong on the ratio or you have other issues. Tire size can play a part. Can't imagine 3.70 gears being an issue unless running 35"-37" tires.

3:70 is sort of the catch-all gearing, jack of all trades? Seems to be common for pickups anyway. Is it considered acceptable for highway speeds (60-70) driven by 6 cylinders? V8?
