I'm about finished with the mods on my 54 , some of which included restoring the gauge cluster with Mid50s stock replacement gauges and senders. The first time I ran the motor (a 272)to check everything out the temp gauge went from zero to pegged, but my infrared sensor said the thermostat hadn't opened yet. I kinda expected this since Mid50 said mid scale was 160 degrees and I can adjust this reading by adding a resister. But then the temp gauge went back to zero and when I checked under the hood, I found the sensor's center post had broken off. I figured I may have unintentionally hit it during the installation. So I ordered another and was very careful during install. I drove the truck today with the same results - Gauge pegged then went back to zero. I checked under the hood and the center post of the sensor was laying on the block, broken just like the first one. Anyone had the same experience? Suggestions?
Thanks, Ken
I had the same problem. After 4-5 months from install, the inner part of the sensor let go from the silicon that holds it in. I found the sensor bouncing around on the intake. The bouncing around caused the the gauge to look like it was getting zapped with electricity and then nothing. At first I thought bad ground or that I did something that caused it to do that. Then I did the "Is It Plugged In" thought, popped the hood and saw the wire with the center laying on the manifold.
I ordered a replacement and put it in. It has been on for about 6 weeks and life is still good. Now I wished I would have called instead of buying it via the website.
Thanks for the responses guys - I wanted to be sure it wasn't something I was doing to cause the failures before I talked to Mid50s. I've bought a lot of parts from them and have had no complaints. I'll give them a call Monday now that I know others have experienced the same problem. Thanks again, Ken
I did call Mid50s as suggested and they're sending me a replacement temp sender NC. They will also send a gauge adjustment resister so I can adjust my temp gauge to read mid scale @ 190 degrees instead of @ 160. They seem to have a clear understanding of what "customer service" and "customer satisfaction" means. It's a great place to shop.
Ken
I also had two senders break on my 54 just as yours did. As soon as I called Mid Fifty, they sent me a new and improved sender...NC!!!!. Within a few days all was good again. So far it is behaving itself.
