Dr Dave - You hit the nail on the head! I will say I feel the guys in office will do anything they can to stay in office because of the money they make. Inside trading is legal for Congressmen & senators but not for the citizens - it should not be for anyone. Having a special retirement fund in stead of Social Security like the rest of us. Having special medical insurance instead of what we are able to get. If the same laws were applied to them that we have to live by I believe we would have a better system, an office should not make you better than any one else in this country. As far as ethanol it is bad stuff for the normal guy but I bet some politian made a good buck off of it getting in to law. Just my 2 cents - Have fun
Ethanol has been in fuel since the 70s. Anyone else remember "With Gasohol?" The way they crack oil is a big part of the problem. Fractional distillation(old way)left in many aromatic hydrocarbons that condition rubber and seals. Catylist cracking(new way) removesmost of those hydrocarbons. I really should say new "gas" is the bane of my existence.
At the state agency I work for, we were stressing E85 for any of our fleet vehicles that could use it. I checked with our fleet management guy and he agreed that it was a bad idea. It reduced fuel economy by 15% and increased maintenance costs by 15%. But, it was political, so they had to push E85 at that time.
A majority of those that vote now vote for Santa Clause. Voters need to realize that Santa takes a big chunk off the top and won't deliver what he promised. Until that day....well, just be prepared.
Not only does gasoline/ethanol eat rubber, but it also corrodes aluminum and pot metal. The Department of Energy's own study concludes that ethanol laced gas corrodes aluminum engine parts at an alarming rate, the higher the E % the faster it corrodes. Read it and weep!: www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/pdfs/merit_review_2012/propulsion_material/pm039_pawel_2012_o.pdf
But the powers that be choose to ignore the government's own study, rather than bite the hand that feeds them... money!
Come on guys. Our government would never mandate anything that would not be good for us. Just look at Obamacare.
I checked the Pure-gas.org site for CA gas stations that carry Ethanol free gas.
There are 18 stations listed for the entire state of California.
I then checked Virginia just to see how it compares to CA, the state with the most cars and gas usage in the country. Virginia shows 296 stations. Tennessee shows 514 stations.
Alternate fuel is a liberal faux pas. Just like the current government, which is, by the way, elected by someone else. No one I vote for EVER gets elected. And I have NEVER voted for Santa Clause or anyone else not on the ballot. I don't like being blamed for what's happened to this country. So there's that.

Joe, that Pure-Gas site is a good guide, but it relies on volunteers to supply the information on these locations. I'd venture that there are a lot more than 18 locations in the state of California. You pointed out that Tennessee has 514, but I have gone over that list and found stations are listed multiple times with location errors. (I found one station about 20 miles from my house that has been closed for 5 years that is listed with 5 different locations within a mile of where it used to be) There are also stations that either don't exist, are closed or no longer carry pure gas. It also is missing several stations that do carry pure gas. I have reported several errors to the site over the past few years, they don't seem to actually update it very often.
One of the problems is the federal oxygenate requirement or somesuch. "Clean air" rules. They used to use MTBE, methyl-tertiary-butyl-something or other, but it was found to leach into groundwater. And subsequently banned. The go-to substitute is apparently 10% ethanol. Another problem is some vendors aren't too particular about the 10%, when measured sometimes approached 35%.

Thanks for that info Joe. I have never tried to find a station for pure gas. I've never seen them advertised here. And I had never heard of Pure-gas.org before reading it in this thread.

You got that right!
People would do wise to remember that any gubmint big enough to give us anything we want is big enough to take it away.
