I've got an 88 F-250 with the 7.3 that struggles to start. It turns over very slow like a dead battery and sputters a few times before it finally starts. Batteries are at 100% with no corroded cables. Bad starter??

Probably; the brushes seem to be a weakpoint on these starters; and most rebuilds are crap.
I went through a few autozone starters then tried one from DB electrical available on amazon. (Cheaper than autozone) feedback on this forum was mostly positive on them, mine has been working well for a month or two.
Thank you for the replies everyone, Sorry it took me so long to get back, I've been down all week with a cold/flu bug. As soon as I can, I'll get out there and wiggle/inspect cables a little closer. In the past, similar issues have been corrosion on the cables.
hey fellows I have a 94 f-350 starter was gone when I got it. I got one from a junk yard but I don't know if it came of a automatic or standard is there a difference

NAPA did offer a new w/ lifetime warranty, no core, and they have stood behind it twice, original purchase was in 07, don't know if they still do, it was only 50 or 60 more than reman from them, worth a phone call
i get me starters and alternators rebuilt from a local rebuild service here with a very good reputation.
he likes to rebuild what you bring in, but has already done units in stock if you are in a rush.
he charges the same or a little less than the parts stores, but you know everything has been replaced.
i tried a BD electric starter in the 88 that was given to me new in the box.
i got about a year out of it before it died.
Kevins starters last 10-12 years and i have never had to take one of his alternators back. the one in the 88 has been in there since 1989, and 476,000 miles.
tjc don't disagree if you know a good rebuilder that's the best route, they tend to know what brand of parts & know what tweeks to make, truck was still company owned when i put first one on, didn't have time to wait on reman. service truck always seems to come last on list until it's down, then everybody scrambles to help you get it back up, since the warranty was there i figured i ought to use it, first replacement was after swamped it, high water, was just below top of fender opening, by the time i was that far in might as well go out the other side
agreed. service trucks always get the short end of the stick, because they never shut off to get any love until they die on their own.
the only thing i do not like about parts store "rebuilds" is that more often than not they only replace the part that is bad, clean it up , and ship it out as "rebuilt". that is a repaired unit, not a rebuilt unit.

sounds like you've been around a svc trk or two, operators & drivers don't understand how it broke, "your the mech it should be the best maintained piece we have" yeah when i get done fixing everything you guys tore up today, i go home & wrench all night on this one Lol,
i have been in heavy construction for 40+ years, and ran a heavy equipment escort service for 20 years. at one time i had 6 trucks on the road every day, with 4 in reserve.
i was lucky in the fact the drivers had assigned trucks, and they took them home. so they took very good care of them, to the point they did their own service on them. all i did was pay for the parts needed. when i downsized the drivers all bought their trucks from me.

Thats a good deal when you can find help like that, kinda hard to find 20 - 30 drivers & operators that have the knowledge to do the svc , not to mention the PM inspection that goes with it, probably wouldn't have a job if you could though Lol
