It seems that every time it gets cold and it rains, my 2001 7.3 is slow to turn over. I just put brand new batteries in it last week and it has been raining here since Thursday. I went out Saturday morning and experienced slow crank. It would not start. I plugged in the engine heater over night and with a jump of another car, it fired up. My batteries are staying charged at 12.8 +. Any thoughts?
Starter, battery cables, solenoid, etc????
I have friends that have the same truck and they leave them at the airports for a week and they start fine.
Here's a quick question as well - I am hearing bad comments about Walmart batteries in the 7.3 diesels, what brand of batteries is everyone running in their 7.3? And what cold cranking amps are you buying?
My guess: starter. I had the same issue with my 300k '00 7.3L, replaced batteries, checked cables, etc. Finally gave up and replaced the starter with a reman and WOW! the difference was absolutely incredible, simply night and day.
I had the same issue before, I replaced it with an autozone reman starter. It fired right up! When I first got the starter atleast. Now i am back to the same issue. Get a starter from napa over advanced or autozone. I will be replacing this one soon. As well as redoing all my wiring with some heavier gauge. There should be no issues after that. Except for possibly the solenoid. However its somewhat unlikely that that fails with out a total failure. Get Napa or OEM, or a Good branded starter. Clean up your contacts and coat them in dielectric grease. Possibly run new cabling to the solenoid then to the starter.
