Stock for 75 would be a Duraspark I. Different control module and the small distributor cap. 77 was the beginning of the Duraspark II. It uses the more standard blue strain relief module and larger distributor cap/plug wires. Either cap/plug wires can be used, but I would use the blue strain relief module. Note the slight difference in wiring. Best to use the Motorcraft module instead of the off brands sold.
DuraSpark electronic ignition introduced in 1974, but not all vehicles came with it until 1976.
1974 DuraSpark ignition module (D4AZ-12A199-C/Motorcraft DY-157-B) is 1974 ONLY!
1975 DuraSpark ignition module (D5AZ-12A199-C/Motorcraft DY-166-B) is 1975 ONLY!
1974 DuraSpark uses the same black dizzy cap (B7A-12106-A) as 1957/74 non hipo V8's.
1975/76 DuraSpark uses the blue H/D V8 dizzy cap (D5AZ-12106-A) that replaced the 1957/74 brown hipo cap (B7AZ-12106-A).
1977 and later DuraSpark uses a much larger V8 dizzy cap that has male ends, snaps onto a plastic adapter located below.
1976/79: There are THREE different DuraSpark V8 modules, but the following is the most common:
1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A & B - D8VZ-12A199-A - D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module-blue (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
Applications: Myriad 1976/90's FoMoCo vehicles / Blue refers to the colored plastic square used to ID modules. It's located above where the wires feed out.
The other two 1976/79 V8 modules have a red square (CA only), or a brown or yellow square (5,000+ high altitude only). Yellow square module replaced the brown module.
Just FYI in case you get stuck. I reused most of the stock 76 mustang harness when I first converted my 49 to a 302. after troubleshooting ignition problem for several hours, I found out that for some 75 and 76 302s, there was a short adapter harness the OEM put between distributer and box. it reversed 2 of the wires. once I put it in place, the engine fired right up.
Just installed a Duraspark II into the 302HO (along with a new gear for the roller cam) that's in my '54 F100. Truthfully, you could get away with one wire - red power to the module (the white one is for starting and not strictly necessary, but it does retard timing slightly)...pretty simple to set up especially with factory harnesses.
