when i try to start my truck sometimes it will start and other times it takes a while. when it doesnt there is something down there spinning, it just wont turn the engine. i'm pretty sure its the starter...also, could a worn out flywheel hurt? i pulled the cover off once when i was trying to get my oil pan out(it doesnt come out btw)and on the front side some of the teeth are ground off. i think they are like that from trying to start the motor when its already started? any help would be great!
sounds like the gear isn't kicking all the way out. If you aren't careful, you will end up like me. I broke a small piece off of mt bendix gear that got stuck in the flywheel. I had to drop the starter in the school parking lot and turn the motor over by hand untill I found it and take it out. I don't think that the fly wheel is worn out yet, but will be soon if you keep kicking the starter without it engaging. I'm no starter expert, but if you pull it out and put 12 volts to it, you could see if it is functioning properly. Some one will come along shortly and correct me, so be patient.
If you are going to keep your old Ford, get used to fixing your starter every now and then. Most of the time a new starter drive will fix it but not always. The best thing would be to get a new starter with a lifetime replacement guarantee and keep your receipt and paperwork safe and handy. You will need it. Most ring gears show some wear on them. They don't usually replacing until they look pretty bad.
