Ok this is on my 91/4.9 This morning the starter started acting up. Turn the key and starter motor comes on but it's like the little gear doesn't come out to engage the flywheel. Turn key off and try again and it works fine. So what could it be solenoid? starter? Ignition switch?
It sounds like your starter clutch drive has a bad clutch.
If you had a Bendix drive the spring would be broken but they have not put a Bendix drive on since about 1955.
I thought the proper term now days was the STARTER DRIVE. That is what the Rock Auto parts site calls it anyway. We used to call it the bendix too.
Back to the Rock Auto parts site, there is quite a price difference between just the drive and a complete starter. If the old starter was otherwise working good, I would rather just replace the drive, I'd have more confidence over a rebuilt starter.
If you replace the drive in a Ford starter, just carefully remove the back housing of the starter. Don't pull the armature out of the brushes or you'll have a hard time getting it back together.
