No affiliation... Ray and I were discussing the fact that the 254 and 226 would have different manifolds, so I looked it up in the parts manual. Sure enough, they are different, and the carbs are different, but I can't tell exactly how much bigger (if any) the 254's carb is. Could be the secret to unlocking the awesome power of the flat-6!
Ross,
I think you need to ditch your truck and step up the beauty of the monkey face trucks. Then you can build a flat 6 with the bigger carb and give us an amazing write up.
Come on man, you know you're just dying for another truck

physically, the intake manifolds interchange between the 226 and 254. However, the 8MTH casting is on the intake, and so something must be different. I would guess it's the intake port size. Or could be the carb base. I have both, so I could compare them come Spring. I'm sure that manifold will be sold by then, lol.
I didn't realize the manifolds were different. Next time I am at dad's shop I will look at the 226 and 254 I have sitting there and see if I can figure out the differences.
Both the 226 and 254 use the same intake and exhaust gasket set, which tells me the ports are likely the same. The differences in the intakes probably have more to do with the fact the 254 had a governor under the carb, possibly needing a different base and studs to accommodate, and vacuum outlets for power brakes that the 226 models may not have had drilled.

That makes more sense to me, now that you mention it.
Here's a pic of the 226 and 254 intakes. Notice the 254 has a bigger port for the hydrovac. and the 226 has a smaller vac port higher up and straight out the back.
