1997 Explorer O2 sensor question

Didn't pass emissions. Codes threw bank 2 sensor 1 for O2 and the DPHE sensor. Replaced DPHE and that code is gone. Replaced O2 sensor and that code is still there. Replaced with a Bosch universal where you have to wire your old plug onto the new sensor.

Got tired of messing with it so took it to a mechanic. He stated that since the Check Engine bulb is blown that codes will always be thrown since the computer thinks you are trying to trick it. He also said that I now have a cam sensor code (never saw that code come up when I tested it the day before)

So my question is do I pull the dash, fix the bulbs and test again? I would assume so but need someone to validate this mechanic's diagnosis. Appreciate any help!

There is a specific code for a bad bulb, and at least in some model years it also chimes the GEM module. A bad CEL bulb will not trigger a diagnostic code for the O2 sensor.

What was the specific code for the O2 sensor, by number? There's really no code that says the sensor is bad, only codes that describe a certain condition being interpreted by a particular sensor or system.

Below is the description of the P0153 and possible causes. If you have access to a scan tool with datastream mode, monitoring the response of the Bank 2 precat sensor 1 might be your best bet, as well as carefully inspecting under the hood for exhaust or vacuum leaks.

H21 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) P0133 AND P0153: HO2S RESPONSE TEST

  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0133 and P0153 indicate the response rate of the upstream HO2S(s) is below some calibrated window. The test measures the HO2S amplitude and output frequency. This is accomplished by superimposing a 1.5 to 2.5 Hz square wave over Lambse. The HO2S switching is monitored during this time to see if the calibration limit is met.
    DTC/HO2S Reference List:
    • DTC P0133 = HO2S-11
    • DTC P0153 = HO2S-21
    Possible causes:
    • Contaminated HO2S.
    • Exhaust leaks.
    • Shorted/open wires.
    • Improper fueling.
    • MAF sensor.
    • Deteriorating HO2S.
    • Air leaks.
  • Key off.
  • Scan Tool connected.
  • Key on, engine off.
  • Select Generic OBD II Function from the menu and trigger.
  • Press Continue.
  • Select Diagnostic Monitoring Test Results from the menu and trigger.
  • Scroll to Test ID: 01 trigger and press start.

Thanks so much Rod! You are a great help! Will have to take it back into a mechanic as I don't have that special diagnostic tool......appreciate your time!

Universal O2 sensors are generally junk. I haven't even had luck with application specific aftermarket sensors lately. Even if they do work they don't last. Go with Motorcraft sensors if you plan to keep this vehicle.

Thanks O5!! I think I will risk another $50 on a more reliable part. I have seen a lot of people have issues with the Bosch model..

Sometimes you can find them on Amazon. The last few I have purchased came from there.

And NGK is the OEM for Motorcraft so if you get NGK by application you should be fine as well. I used NGK in my Aviator without issue.
