what can make a belt suddenly become very loose but not break?

I've got the 7.3 PSD and the pulley to the right and below the alternator feels a little weird when I roll it... what is that attached to? Which/where is the tensioner?

I think it's the alternator. The one on the top right... looks ike alternator to me. Not that one but the one lower and a little farther to the right.

Nevermind I think I figured it out.... is it possible to pop the belt off a pulley when mudding?

Very possible. When the motor is going up and down in RPMs quickly and the vehicle is moving around in ways it doesn't normally move things start coming out of place.

The pulley to the right and bellow the alternator is the power steering pump/pulley.

I haven't seen it happen in years but I guess while mudding it is possible the belt can be thrown off a pulley.

Well it's running fine now. This morning the shifter was stuck.... I put the key towards on but not all the way over and found a spot where the shifter released. The first day I tried to drive her the darn batteries were dead dead dead. Still under warranty thankfully. My car is stuck in the mud/snow. Not my week!
