1987 F150 4X4, 302 fuel inj. I was changing my belt the other day and saw this and wanted some info. The adjustable tension pulley for the belt was off center. When I moved it up to make room for the new belt ,the pulley and the alternator( which it's attached to ) both move in and out.. The alternator is mounted on the motor but ,, its about a quarter inch from sitting flush with the motor. As your looking down on it there's a threaded stud on the left but nothing on the right. Finally ,my question is, is there a bracket missing ,that's fell off, or did the bolt just loosen up . And also whats the proper space that should be there?
Try going to a garage and have a "knowledgable technician" look at it. Try finding a truck like yours to compare. If all else has failed, go to a salvage yard to see a truck with alternator set up similar to yours.
The bolts holding the bracket on probably just loosened. Look around best you can and try to tighten up the ones you can find and get to, and see if it helps. The accessories should have a solid mount, as the tensioning is taken care of by the belt tensioner.
