Whats this Manual Trans cover for?
I just purchased this truck and have no ideal of it's past. It's suppose to be an original 84000 Farm Truck and the PO said he replaced the 360 with a 390 in the 80's, it should have approx 50000 miles on it, but there's a ton of thick oil all over the transmission. There's a side cover as seen in the picture.
If I take off the side cover, will all the fluid come out.
What might be the big leak.
The truck shifts smooth, no grinds.
What fluid goes back in???
Wheres the fill plug??
I want to power wash the whole under carriage today and fix the leak.
Thank you!!!

I bet it is a PTO (power take off) cover plate. Come here for cleaning fluid tips.

Careful getting to up close and personal and in the seems with the pressure washer, if oil can get out, water can get it.
Trying to figure out the pic angle, see the 2 square end thread in plugs? One should be the drain and one the fill, I believe?
NP435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 /
P = F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.
To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it counter clock wise to remove it. (Its spring loaded and twists into place, we removed one and it was a 2 person job. Put the trans into 2nd, 4th, or reverse, then one person holds the cap and applies pressure, twisting in a counter clockwise direction. The other person hits it from the top with a hammer to get the cap to go in below the two clips that hold it in.) People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out the pins.
Originally NP435: Reverse-down towards the seat while Warner T-18: Reverse-up towards the dash.
The reverse shift pattern was changed circa 1973, but I can't recall for which of these 4 speeds. ( I believe it the NP435)
Note: There's another 4 speed: RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive introduced in 1978 F100/150 300/302, TRANS code B

The PO said he had taken the Hydraulic pump off before being sold. I do not know what Hydraulic pump he is referring to. Could this pump been bolted to the PTO? Maybe that is the reason why there is so much gunk in that area, also you can see new bolts on the PTO cover as if someone had done something to it lately.........................

hydro pump
Here is a picture of a pump that the pto on your trans would turn to activate the hydraulic movement.Like Bill mentioned you need to rule out oil loss from gaskets,,,if you could find somewhere to steam clean,thats what I did when i started at the begining,congrats!That np435 is tough as nails,,,,pull up Novack on your search ,look up trans np 435 and read the good news of their thoughts

Yes, I do need to determine what type of fluid is leaking. It can be both or either gear oil or motor oil, shouldn't be too hard to tell by smell.
Very, very interesting about the PTO, this is virgin ground for me. The PO said his Dad ordered everything Heavy Duty, reason for a 460 Radiator and D60 front diff.
Yesterday I drove to the Car Wash and all 5 stalls were 4 cars deep. I didn't want to chance being stuck if the truck ignition got wet. I'll try pressure washing sometime next week, I bought 4 cans of Engine Cleaner, hope that helps!
