Transmission issues
Transmission issues
I have a '79 f150 with a 3 speed manual transmission. Last month the clutch fork slipped off the pilot bearing. Now the clutch pedal is on the floor. When I pull the tranny I would like to put a 4 speed instead of the old 3 speed. It has a 300 straight 6 motor, what transmission do I have to be looking for? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
NP-435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts
Warranty Plate TRANS code:*A*= NP435 (N-1965 only) /*F*= Warner T-18 /*P*= F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.
To remove this cap, it must be*pressed*down*and*held*down*while turning it counter clock wise to remove it. (Its spring loaded and twists into place, we removed one and it was a 2 person job.
Put the trans into 2nd, 4th, or reverse, then one person holds the cap and applies pressure, twisting in a counter clockwise direction. The other person hits it from the top with a hammer to get the cap to go in below the two clips that hold it in.) People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out the pins.
Originally NP435: Reverse-down towards the seat while Warner T-18: Reverse-up towards the dash.
The reverse shift pattern was changed circa 1973, but I can't recall for which of these 4 speeds. (I believe it the NP435)
Note:*There's another 4 speed: RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive introduced in 1978 F100/150 300/302, TRANS code*B

Thanks. My truck was originally a 3 on the tree. The first owner put it in the floor when it broke off the column. With a custom shifter in it now it's been hard to figure out. When I ran the code all I got was a Ford 3 speed Manual listed.
Ford type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh manual transmission, TRANS code C used 1966/86.
The 3 speed is a top loader. So you can put in a 4 speed top loader trans. Need to watch the tail shaft for the shifter to mount the Mustang trans had the shifter mount on the back of tail shaft. All others where forward more to mount shifter.
I found a four speed toploader. My father in law has 4 or 5 of them he says. Besides the location of the shifter mount not being near the end of the tail shaft is there anything I need to look for to make sure I get the correct transmission?

That should be it.If you can get the codes from the trans and google the Top Loader numbers there are some different gear ratios mostly for 1 st gear. The codes are on the right side towards front of trans. Could be RUG,Heh ETC. to start it will tell what trans came from, year and what engine it was behind.
