Hey Everyone! New to this forum, but I have found my best advice on my other vehicles in their specific forums so I figured this would be the best place to find information.
My family's workhorse vehicle is an 02 F250, Triton V8 5.4 (if I remember correctly on the size).
My main concern for this vehicle (and by extension a little Escort of which I am trying to rid myself) is whether or not Motorcraft oil and filter is really a necessity for Ford engines when changing oil. I have heard both sides of that argument, but I'd really prefer to put in a Valvoline or Castrol in this beast.
The answer to your question is in your "Owner's Manual" .
Owner's manual specifies an oil grade (like Motocraft 5W 20 ) and says or EQUIVALENT meeting Ford Specification WSS-M2C153-H.
So you need to check 2 things:
1-Are you selecting the correct Ford recommended grade ( 5W20 or 10W30 or 0W20 ,etc.).
2- Is the oil of your choice meeting Ford Spec WSS-M2C153-H ( read the label).
The owner's manual for this vehicle is long gone haha; it was an old work truck that my father bought off of his company when he "retired" (long story). So thank you! I'll keep that in mind when I go shopping later today or tomorrow
No not all. Just use a quality oil and filter. I will say however that the Motorcraft oil filters at WalMart are hard to beat for the price. Such a good deal that they're usually sold out and I end up buying a Fram Tough Guard!

I'll second this. You can get a Motorcraft 5 quart container for $17 and filter for something like $3. Usually the oil and filters are sold out so when I can get them I just buy a bunch as my F350 and Escape use the same.....
I would stay with the Motorcraft filter. It is a bargain. Oil is subjective. Just use the 5w20 that is recommended for your particular engine.
^^^ This.
The Motorcraft filter is known to be a great deal compared to the other ones out there. It has a real silicone anti-drainback valve and metal end caps. These are things you'd have to pay twice as much from any other brand's premium filter.
Oil is oil. API SN and 5w20 are all that matter. Motorcraft oil always does well on the used oil analyses posted on Used Oil Analysis - Bob is the Oil Guy - Bob is the Oil Guy, but so does just about every other modern oil. If it's API-rated and of the right weight it HAS to be great stuff; anything less would not pass the API certification.
I feel the motorcraft oil isn't that much, if at all, more expensive than any other brand. Especially at a place like Walmart. A 5 quart jug at the auto parts store is around $25.99 and walmart was $17.99. But just like you said the oil is the same if rated the same. Next trip I need to pick up a few filters and a few 5qt jugs to have on hand since both vehicles use the same.
