going to look at: 6.0 PowerStroke 138k miles, complete frontend rebuilt with all Moog parts. New head gaskets, oil cooler, high volume oil pump, and stainless steel EGR cooler
If it has new head gaskets then there was a head failure.
1. Were the heads sent out to be boiled, pressure tested, checked for any warping, and machined when pulled off the engine to replace the head gaskets?
2. Was the EGR checked, replaced, deleted?
3. Were the heads studded when reinstalled? (most common head studs are ARP)
4. Was the turbo pulled and compressor fins and vanes checked for any melting or debris damage? If so, were the turbo bushings checked for any wear or play in the shaft?
5. Were the injectors pulled and tested?
6. Was the oil cooler checked for any restrictions? If not, has the coolant system been high pressure flushed? If not, why???
7. Has the radiator been pressure tested?
8. Was the coolant reservoir/degas bottle replaced?
9. Was the HPOP (High Pressure OIL Pump) checked?
10. Was the ICP (Injection Control Pressure) sensor replaced?
If none of this was done, I'm here to tell you, you're about to buy a money pit.
I'm back. He made no attempt to shine it up or clean the interior. The body is solid with one or two very minor dents, few paint chips. Leather seating is somewhat cracked. The engine wasn't cleaned and had a bit of a greasey smell. He purchased it 4 months ago from a friend who had the previous work completed at another Ford dealership. He'll get the work orders showing work.
All he's done is an oil change and installed an edge programmer. Regrets buying this first diesel.

Another red light and why only keep it for 4 months? I think I'd pass if it were me from the info supplied unless it was dirt cheap.
I've had good luck with mine, I would at least drive it with a scan gauge, dash boss to see what's going on. In the tech folder there is a guide to help you out. Good Luck.
Last week he started out asking $15K but over time/discussions today I agreed to look it over at $12, which he claims is payoff. I walked based solely upon appearance (poor excuse) and the dirty engine area. I figured I'd give a few days and see if he comes back yet again.
I know nothing about diesels and simply want something ready to enjoy/ tow my 5vr, with no worries.
I can do that with my current ride but want something with a full back seat, and maybe a few amenities (power windows/ door locks).
did you read the tech folder? It gives a full run down on what to look for. Must drive the truck with a scan gauge or Dash boss or anything to read the engine to see whats going on. Check the oil vs water temp. should be within fifteen degrees of each other, driven 65mph on level ground for a good period of time. Make sure the FICM reads at least 48 volts. I'd drive the thing for an hour and turn it off and start it again. And drive some more. And reread MDSparks response. he has some good answers. Good Luck!!
To be very (reluctantly) honest, I'm not mechanically inclined that way. While not disgusting, I just didn't like it's appearance (both interior and exterior), engine bay smells, or owners own (masked) lack of confidence in it.
He will now have to nearly give it away to get my $.
So hint to you private sellers (which dealers obviously know well) ... make it shine. Make it smell good. Be confident that it's the best thing since sliced bread. And it wouldn't hurt to be a 30 something year old female beauty!
I've now moved on to an 08 F350 XLT, 125K miles, asking $19K. More $ than I wanted- but it drew the approval of my bride.
