AOD and torque converter question
engine would want to die at intersections when the brake was at the floor,
then buck and almost stall when i accellerate.
liked to idle high between 25-35 mph with no accelleration,
trans fluid doesn't have shavings, smells slightly off, maybe more brownish.
the end of the smallest input shaft looks like someone put a grinder to it. not a ton, just enough to make some marks.
I recently purchased a B&M 2000 stall speed torque converter expecting that was the promlem. after my very long period of diagnosing and the advice of a couple good friends, it appeared as if my torque converter was bad. I called a transmission shop today and basically said I would hate the 2000 stall speed torque converter and that the converter is most likely okay after all. His conclusion is the 3rd gear clutch/drum(?)
You can imagine the feeling after spending almost $200 and now finding out that it's worthless to replace and i'll hate it. his advice makes sense but I would like a second opinon.
What would the symptoms of a burnt 3rd gear be? any opinions are appreciated
Assuming he's saying you'll hate it because of the low stall speed, I'm not sure I'd agree. A higher stall speed will let the engine rev higher where it (usually) makes more power, so a lower stall speed will make an engine feel less powerful. But personally I hate auto transmissions (actually I could just stop there...) that let an engine rev a lot. As far as I'm concerned, if you want the engine to rev higher you ought to be in a lower gear. I don't want the additional heat (and additional fuel use) that results from slipping the torque converter more. So personally I'm pretty sure I'd prefer a lower sall speed, but I also know that I'm not exactly in the middle of the opinions on this.
As far as the rest of your questions, sorry, I can't help you there.

The last part of your quote about the small shaft munged up is for the 3rd and OD input. If that is slipping inside the torque converter you will have issues with 3rd and OD gears. That input shaft is a direct link to the engine when the AOD is in 3rd and OD as the AOD torque converter is a non locking type.
The rest of the issues are probly not a tranny problem. A good tune up or diagnose the engine issues needs to be done.
