I have a 89 f350 with 5.8 efi. A guy at the firehouse has some gt40 heads off an explorer said he'd give them to me but will they work? If so what intake should I find to go with it? Looking at converting to carb later but just wondering if this will work

they work. need to drill the head bolt chases 1/2" to accommodate the 351's larger head bolts.
the 351 efi intake bolts right up, but its a pretty bad intake in general. porting the **** out of the lower helps and works well enough if youre lookin do do the swap on a budget. an aftermarket like the edelbrock or typhoon will be better. or get an adapter from price motorsports to bolt a 5.0 truck intake to our 351.
itd be terrible to do the head swap without a cam swap also.
im not a fan of converting efi to carb, but during this swap would be a perfect time to convert.
Thanks yea I know way more about carb motors(dirt racing) than I do about efis! Yea looking to do on a budget but don't mind waiting to get all the parts togather. So if I stay efi can I swap anothr throttle body? If so what do I need to look for? Looking to get more power but can't dump thousands on it and yea would love to have a load of HP but doing little by little!

the stock throttle body is plenty sufficient for pretty much anything that can be done within reason. those expensive throttle bodies are a gimmick....
cam, 1.7 roller rockers, and the heads will net huge gains over what you have now. if you really want it to run good, mill the heads to net your compression into the 10.x:1 range. im not sure how much can be taken off the regular gt40's to achieve those CR's without causing intake problems or milling of the intake to fit, but I was able to achieve ~10.5:1 with my P's with milling of the heads only, and port matching the intake with the heads bolted to the engine.
Thanks its that for get some other heads and do a full port and polish, port match intake and exhaust. But not sure if it'd be worth it on some junkyard heads. I do the work, will look into cams. Looking at tinkering with this one or getting another motor building it up and swapping. Maybe leaninmore towards that option. Again still may swap my heads and intake for a little fun. Thought it would be cool to see a 350 that could beat the crap out of a ricer
a trustworthy machine shop can tell you the condition of the valves and the seats, so you may be able to get away with avoiding valve job costs. gotta be careful not to knick seats when porting though...I was able to avoid the cost of a valve job on my explorer heads. if a valve job was needed, I agree its hard to justify spending the dough when for a few hundred more you can go with aftermarket. the work adds up quick, milling and cleaning is inexpensive. seals are inexpensive, but if valve job is needed it can start pushin 6-700 total, including the cost of the heads themselves. the fact you are getting them for free helps justify the work if its required....
Thanks, yea he is a big mustang guy and said I should build a 350 sleeper complete with nos all, I asked for his check book and he said I have some heads I'll give you instead. Should be a fun project but will take alot of time!
starting from scratch isn't a bad idea either, and is what I prefer when possible (easy to work on an engine stand, then swap 'er in). the 351 has huge stroke potential for little over the cost of a standard cube rebuild. if you want to give cars a run for their money, id highly recommend going with big cubes. if I could go back, I would have coughed up the dough to go that route. I built mine for peanuts when it was all said and done, and while I have an engine that is fresh and has decent power, I'd much rather have spent a little extra to get a lot more.
