I need to do some work on my truck that requires removing the alternator. As long as I am doing that, I wanted to know if there is a way to tell if the pigtail is the updated one or not. Also, I wanted to be sure, it is recommended to put electrical grease on the plugs before reconnecting, correct?
The Ford TSB states that the pigtail should be replaced any time the alternator is changed.
If you are replacing the alternator you should put a NEW "fire plug".
You can tell if it has been changed because it will only be crimped on.
Yes, use grease to keep the prongs from corroding and melting the plug.
There are nine manufacturers that make the replacement plug that I know of, but I'm on my phone, so....

What truck are you working on? I don't think any of the diesels had the 2G alternator that I have run across.

'86 F250 6.9l. I assumed that it is a 2G alternator, otherwise I don't know what it is. Are the stock alternators on the diesels something other than a 2G? My alternator has that external fan thing.

Sure does look like it has the dual plug output like a 2G. My 89 diesel has a relative of the 1G, but it's about 100 amp output. I have the external regulator.
Ford must have though better of it and went back to the 1G style. They also had a ambulance package on these with a very large alternator made by a different company. I think it was up there like 200 amps or something.
My 86 ranger had a 2G on it. After reading all the trouble they had with it, and seeing the price of a rebuilt one, I installed a 86 GM internal regulated alternator on it instead off a Monte Carlo SS. I think it might be a 100 amp unit also.
