Weird 2000 V10 noises?

In the last week or two my Excursion has been making weird noises coming from under the truck, sounds like it is coming from under the front seats when driving.

It is a 2000 V10, Limited with 34,000 miles on it.

The noise is kinda hard to describe, the best I can explain it is - if you can imagine you are driving at speed and the thin metal dust cover lightly makes contact with the rotors on your brakes , that type of "tin" sound but it's not coming from the brakes. It makes the most noise when the motor is cold/warming up. The truck shifts great and runs great, it's just a noise (right now anyway ). It makes the noise when it is under load, and the noise varies with engine speed. If I rev the motor in Park, sometimes it will make the noise for a split second other times it won't. I was just driving on the highway with the Overdrive turned OFF, when I was going downhill using engine braking it was making that noise almost the whole time, otherwise it only does it under acceleration, at partial throttle (maybe 1/8 to 1/6th throttle) and only for a second or two. It seems to occur most often at 1200 rpm's and again at 1700 rpms if you feather the throttle.

Any ideas???

This sounds like the noise from a two-piece heat shield (I believe that's what it is) near where the transmission bolts up to the engine (I think). There is a thread here with solutions to this (it may be in the V10 forum). sorry I don't have the definite location of the thread, but if you search the V10 forum for noises, you'll find a thread including some pictures of how the one piece comes off. I believe most people have jammed something in between the remaining piece to stop the noise.

I am a recent V10 X owner and noticed the same problem, just haven't got around to fixing it yet.

I was really hoping that was it, but it wasn't. I wedged some metal duct tape in that shield every which way with no change. I banged around on everything I could find under the truck and I am still not having any luck.

A buddy of mine is a wrench at a Ford dealership, he's gonna take a listen to it tomorrow for me, the noise is driving me crazy now

The truck runs great still and shifts perfectly, so I am hoping it is something simple and hopefully stupid!

My similar noise in my 00 V10 was a heat shield on the Y-pipe. One of the welds had broke. I found it by lifting the edges of the shields. A hose clamp fixed it.

It turns out I was out of oil....

Just kidding! It is the heat shield on the left exhaust. I checked that one a few times too, but it wasn't appearant until you pull it back Two of the welds had come loose. Picking up a hose clamp tonight on the way home

Thanks for the replies!

I have no heat shields left on my y pipe. Every one of them broke a weld or two... Now they're all gone - no more broken welds, no more heat shields, no more rattles.
