I've had this noise (see link below) coming from the transmission since I bought the truck. I originally thought it wasn't a big deal. I had the inspection plate off when I found out I had starter issues and saw then that the plate had a wobble. I remembered the wobble being worse then, but a lot of sleepless nights have occurred since then from our little girl. Anyway, the noise has seemed to get louder so I started researching the issue. Other you tube videos have a similar sound. I don't have a scanner, but the noise goes away at 30 mph, from what I believe is the TC locking out. If I let the fuel peddle off and let it coast, it comes back at 20 mph. If I hit the brake peddle, unlocking the TC, the noise comes back. I've read a broken flex plate is common but I've never seen a current thread in the issue. Is this common? Any ideas? I'm taking to a trans shop in the morning to get an opinion. 1997 7.3 CC 2wd LB
Cracked flex plate would be my guess. Just changed the one in my son's '96. It was cracked around the bolts that bolt it to the crank ( where they always crack). I would get it out and look at it ASAP. If it ends up cracking all the way around and spins the center out of the flex plate, it will damage the 1" thick spacer between the crank and flex plate, and those are really hard to find.
Thanks for the heads up. I've read when the go it can break a lot of stuff. Where did you purchase a new one? I'm confused how it makes so much noise from being broken?

I didn't purchase one......I have several parts trucks. It makes noise because the piece that is under the crank bolts is solid and secure, and the whole rest of the flex plate is moving back and forth.
Thanks. It seemed too simple to be how the noise is caused but it's worse than nails on a chalk board. My ears are still ringing from taking the video. Need a parts truck of my own. Not sure what my wife would say to have more stuff in the driveway.
Update - trans shop feels it could be the plate but can't see any damage while it's installed in the truck. During the test drive he couldn't rule out the TC. Waiting for a estimate. In the end - you gotta pay to play!
Just to give you an idea of what can happen... I saw this on a Bronco forum; it was from '92 IDI.

Not cool. Based on how far I have to go to get it fixed, I may may have the trans rebuilt if it the TC is bad. The PO said he never had it rebuilt and he didn't know the history before him. Don't want to pay half of the cost to get it fixed and need to get the trans repaired sooner than later. As usual who knows if sooner ever happens.
I'm trying to figure out how to move forward. The previous owner has installed a Banks kit on the truck - chip, intercooler, turbo housing, trans command. I'm weighing many options including a rebuild. The transmission installer discussed installing an upgraded shift kit in the trans. I called Banks about still using the trans command and a shift kit. The tech guy said the trans command should only be used with a stock shift kit; adding the trans command would be too much.
My question is what is better - electronic shift controller or a shift kit installed in the trans. The tech guy mentioned that with the shift kit hard shifts are always going to be there vs the electric version is based on the amount of throttle given.
I'm having a difficult time finding information comparing the two.
I know Banks stuff isn't well liked but the chip I have provides enough power for me. I'm just trying to find out which way to have the trans built is best.
I can't really give any advice on that, I shake hands with my trans. But the only reason the Banks stuff isn't liked is because of the price.
And only mediocre performance gains at that high price.
Banks just never had much love for our trucks really.
I would drop the pan and see how much trash is in the bottom.
My truck had a converter replaced before I owned it. At that point I thought my buddy was Insane for not rebuilding the trans.
Here I am beating the thing still 6-8years later.
Just roll the dice.
I would do the trans shift kit over the banks stuff honestly.

Back before i bought it, I wanted a manual. However, based price and what I was looking for it was hard to find a manual.

That is something to say based on the engine you built. My rational, based on the price to make repairs of the plate and possible TC, is that I'd hate to have the trans blow, take out the TC and have to do it all over again. But hey, we take chances all the time.
what type of shift kit is recommended that I could read up on?

as Jarred said transgo tugger. also IF rebuilding the unit check into the sonnax cure package. I think I will be going that route on a future unit.
