Rear hatch light switch

Could not locate any threads about this problem. VERY surprised concentering all 3 X's I've owned have had the same issue ?? The rear hatch light/door ajar switch quit responding to the required 2 or 3 SLAMS it always takes to get it to make up & turn of the interior lights. So the other night I'm driving around looking like a Christmas tree on wheels. Was going to clean or bypass the switch yesterday BUT I CAN NOT EVEN FIND IT!! I pulled the glass latch tabs looking for the wire or contacts BUT they are just empty plastic. Where the heck is the contact switch ??? THANKS in Advance

try this, leave your vehicle unlocked shut all doors and when the int, lights turn off, open the rear hatch door and see if the int. lighs come on?

it doesn't come on because it does not exist, i don't think i have ever replaced one in rear hatch. heres a simple solution, when it acts up , spray some carb spray at the bottom of door latch where the hook is on all the doors and observe which one shuts it off.
you may have to manually latch and unlatch multiple times on each door
the cargo light has a slider switch....on-off-door... and on door mode it works off the main 4 doors
when you find the bad one replace the ajar switch
usually drivers door

i may be wrong tho as im only referring to early excursions, but ford has built in a battery saver relay that will shut off all accy. when the key is off in about 45 min to hour...ford says hour but ive seen turn off earlier

I have inquired about this off and on for 3 years but nobody seems to know where this illusive switch or contact point is or how it works.

Holy crap Batman : Are you kidding me .. On one hand I don't feel like such an idiot BUT it has UNFIXED it self again ..
All my X's are 2000 6.8 4x4 & they all have the issue, the other 2 will always make up after a slam or 2 .
OK on my trucks the barn doors do nothing ONLY the back glass will turn on / off the lights. THERE has to be a switch of some type on the hatch. There are treads on here of tailgaters disconnecting the back light switch SO somebody knows where it is & how it works !!

How about we take a different tack.. CAN ANYONE SEND ME A LINK OR THREAD LOCATION OF THE INTERIOR LIGHT BYPASS SWITCH MOD ?? the other day I found 3 that finally let to the most resent find : A SINGLE WIRE on the driver side kick panel to cut & switch so you can turn on & off lights at will. I've looked all day today I AND I CANN"T FIND IT EITHER !!! THANKS

I may have just gotten lucky, but I fixed mine spraying wd-40 into the the latch mechanism in the rear hatch. No more slamming and it always shuts off the light now. I was liberal with the wd-40.

I do have the interior lights cut-off mod but it was install by the previous owner. If you don't find the thread, PM me and I'll trace the wires for you.

This thread is not related to the specific problem you have but had some great pictures of the latch assembly. (LINK)

I believe the sensor for the dome lights on all doors is built into the latch itself so I'm not sure how you could disable the lights without disabling the electric locks.

So why put a bandaid on it and act like an Ostrich? I am sure someone can get to the bottom of it. I am tired of slamming it like an uninformed idiot myself.

I'd take the slam method any day: The problem is, even it's not working on this truck.
I want to do the LIGHT MOD anyway. One of the stupidest "better ideas" Ford ever came up with !! Really, 12 to 14 lights burning for at least 20min at a time with no override ?? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING !!!

MB: Thanks but I know the thread is there & current, I JUST CAN'T FIND that sucker again.... There are several different ways to do it (3 that I know of ) BUT I want to do the left side single wire cut !!

I went the other direction with the wd40 I'll try the other way when the sun comes out...IT'S 28 DEG's right now

To All with an interest: The WD-40 seems to have corrected the issue. The back hatch has been used 50 times or so after a good spraying ON TO THE LATCHES INSIDE the door with a 100% NO-FAIL rate.......

It is inside the door & has some connection to the door latch it self is the general theory I believe.. <!-- / message -->
