put the truck in 4x4 to ffed the cattle and condition are very muddy. after i finished and got back on road it would not come out of 4x4. Then i did the stupid thing and put it in low range to see if that worked. now im stuck in low range. ideas?
If your desperate to shift it in high range, heard of people pulling the electric shift moter on the transfercase & reaching in to shift, you might want to block tires in case you can select neutral.other wise a bump to the top for people with more experience than me.
Have you tried stopping, backing up put it in neutral, foot on brake then switching it out? Some times there pretty picky. I've had it happen to, but got it out like that.
I could not get mine out of 4lo the first time I used it, but I didn't know that you need to be in neutral with the brakes on to do so. Maybe something wrong with the neutral sensor or whatever the brakes actuate, relay or some such.
When shifting into or out of LOW range, the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake applied, and the transmission in NEUTRAL (A/T) or the clutch pedal be depressed (M/T).
I had to tap on it with a hammer once, then get in the truck and try it again and it switched.
What was it you tapped on and where is it?
I know about having to have it in neutral with brake on to engage and dis engage LO range. What is interesting is that before I did the stupid thing and put it into LO range it would not even come out of 4x4 with the shift on the fly switch or anything else I tried (reverese, locking/unlocking hubs etc.
Doug, do you have the stock auto hubs or manual hubs? The reason I ask is the auto hubs will stay locked in 4WD if the 2WD electrical signal is not present from the selector switch. The position of the manual actuator on the hub itself will not disengage the hubs if the truck is still in 4WD. Your choice is only "locked" or "auto", not locked, unlocked. I believe that a series of vacuum pulses causes the hubs to either lock or unlock in the 4WD mode.
That is why many of us have bought manual hubs. If one auto hub stays locked with one unlocked the repair bills can be very high.

I have the stock auto hubs. In "Auto" position the hubs are engauged by a vacum line to the front wheels. If it had not stuck in 4x4 Lo Range I could have just pulled the vacum lines off the front wheels to disengauge the front wheels 4x4 temporarily, although the front drive axle would have still been engauged.
I'm with Crop Harvester, pull the shift motor off the xfer case and rotate the shaft manually. And inspect the motor and wiring, maybe it took a rock or something in the field.
And check the fuses. I think for the e99 there are relays under the hood too, check your owners manual.
Not everybody can read them, but many here can - yet they don't have them. With the availability of the diagrams, more people can contribute to troubleshooting. For example, fuse 59 in the fuse box by the knee of this truck's driver is a 30 amp fuse, and that powers the high/low range relays. Ford changed the electrical configuration many times, that's why there are multiple diagrams above.
Took it to a tire shop that has done simple mech work for me before and guy there new a little about 4x4 stuff. He got his voltage tester and measured voltages going to 4x4 motor on and tranfer case as I changed the SoF from 2 Wheel to 4x4 to 4x4LO. He said it was a bad 4x4 sensor keeping it stuck in 4x4 mode and showed me where the sensor was. He left the cable to the 4x4 motor on the transfer case disconnected so I could drive it in 2 wheel mode until I get a new sensor but said if I need 4x4 mode in the mean time all I have to do is plug the cable back in. I may have to do that today becasue it has rained about 1/2 inch and I have to haul some calves out of a pasture.
