I have a 2013 F150 extended cab 4x4 with a 5.0.I,ve had it almost a year but have done mostly city driving and short trips.Been getting 15 to 16 MPG.Truck has 11k miles.Justdrove from Michigan to Florida mostly running 3 to 5 MPH over the speed limit.Averaged a little over 17 MPG.Guess I was expecting a little better.
What differential gear ratio do you have? I have an identical truck configuration and 3.55 gears. Around town - short trips 15 - 16 mpg is about what i'm getting.
What was the actual speed you were running on the highway? 75-80, I'm at about 16-17 MPG. Drop down to 65-70 and 18-19 MPG. If I can set the cruise control at 60, I'll get 20-21 (but that only happened once to see how good it could be).
Mine also has 3.55 gears. Some states have 65 speed limits,I ran about 68.States with 70 limits I run about 75 except Georgia where I ran 73.I heard Georgia was having a big crackdown on speeders over 73.Never really ran over 75.
Beat me to the punch line. My truck is a little older 2011 4x2 with the 5.0 and I believe 3.55 gears, and if I can leave the cruise set below 70 I'll break 21 miles a gallon on a flat surface.
2013 F150 FX4 5.0 3.55 gears gets about 16.8 mpg on the highway doing about 75 most of the time at 7200ft altitude. Mileage is always down a bit in the wintertime due to the oxygenated fuel, it has less energy per gallon than summer fuel.
I,m spending the winter in Bradenton,fl. In-laws live down near Naples. It,s a 240 mile round trip.I,m sure we will be going there every week or two.I-75 is pretty much flat all the way.I will be trying different speeds every trip to see how the truck does.May even try different octane fuels.Might even try it at 60 mph.why be in a hurry to see my mother-in-law.
I am not sure what you were expecting to get, doesn't sticker say 15/19... seems you are get what was advertised?
I have a the same truck.. I seem to get around 17 - 17.5 in daily driving which is usually short trips.. I longer highway trips, I range from 19.5-22 ish.. all depends on speed, above 75 certainly effects MPG
Are we getting a little unrealistic on our mpg expectations???
No offense meant to anyone...
but I just replaced a 2000 F250 crew, 5.4l, 4" lift with 35's that saw only 13.5 mpg/hwy, 9 to 10/mpg city on a really good day!, to a 2014 F150 FX4 Eco crew with HD tow, luxury pkg, 2" lift with 22/33's, 36gal tank, retract running boards etc...so not the lightest 150 and see 17.8 avg/hwy and 13.3/city. Have less than 3k on it so still breaking in, and I live in SoCal where if your not driving like Andretti your getting run over.
I'm kinda thinkin that any Ford full size 4x4 crew cab gas pickup with all that power, torque, and comfort that can haul almost anything you hitch to it and get anywhere near the twenties on milage is freekin awesome!!!
Sheeez...my girlfriends V6 Honda only gets 23 mpg/avg....
I just got a 14' regular cab shortbox with the 5.0, I'm not all that impressed with the mileage on my work commute. 13 miles one way with quite a few stops, it is full blown winter here so I am running in 4 wheel drive most of the time. I had a 94' Bronco with the 302 and 35" BFG mud terrains, BOTH vehicles got about the same mileage on my work commute (about 13 MPG) however, my new truck IS a lot better on a highway trip (just one so far) I averaged 19 MPG where as the Bronco mileage never really changed much.
I didn't buy the truck for gas mileage, so I'll deal with it but I kind of thought 20 years of technology would have made more of a difference.
Mixed winter driving on regular octane gets me about 15-16 in the 3.5. If I use high test 93 octane I jump to 18 MPG but that's a net-net trade considering the price difference.
Some have said it, but the optimal speed for optimal MPG is around 55-60 MPH. This past weekend hunting and driving country roads (55mph) I was getting ~20 for a majority of the trip. Average since then is still at 18.2 as of tonight with a tank of 93.
I was talking today with another Ecoboost owner and I think the consensus is between us that expecting anything over ~17-18 at best isn't terribly realistic for mixed driving. It happens, but it's not going to be the norm. I do recommend every few tanks to give the truck the old Italian Tuneup...AKA drive the snot out of it! Clears out carbons and opens things up. I just went through this previous to my current tank of gas and I'm surprised that I'm getting the mileage I am in winter.

Not to mention at that altitude your 5.OL is taking a hit on power.
Last weekend I ran the same 200 mile trip twice with my 2014 f150 eco 3.31 crew with just over 2000 miles.
The first day outside temp was in the single digits F, I drove with cruise set at 62-65 and trip mileage was 19.5. Next day was near 50 F, same trip cruise set about the same, trip mileage reset at start of trip and mileage was 21.4. I have noticed that on the cold days the transmission takes forever to fully warm up, almost 15 miles.
Overall I see a noticeable improvement in mpg over the 98 expedition we had with 5.4 and 3.31.
