Remote Tailgate Lock DIY
I ordered a couple of cheap universal door lock actuators from eBay for $8.00 You only need one, but I figured I would keep an extra around in case of a failure.
I started by removing the fasteners on the tailgate cover and then just spun it around the assist handle to gain access to the locking mechanism.
Once you can see the lock you can then figure out where to drill the one hole that is used to mount the actuator. Once you mount it then you will need to bend the round rod that looks like a "spoke" to attach to the lock and cut off any excess length. This bends easily with a couple of pair of pliers.
This picture shows the black rectangular locking mechanism. You can also see the clamp that the rod attaches to.
This photo shows the gold colored clamp and the rod as well as the brass colored screw that attaches the actuator to the tailgate. You can see how I bent the rod in several places in order to connect the rod to the actuator and locking mechanism. It doesn't have to be very precise as the end of the actuator swivels and it simply has to move one about a 3/4".
I then ran the wires out of the bottom of the tailgate and attached it to the other wiring for the camera. I put it in a 1/4" split loom and ran this along the frame rail to the passenger side rear door sill area. (You may want to consider putting a disconnect plug at this location in case you need to remove your tailgate.) I then removed the step plate and drilled a hole and ran the wire into that area. You will then need to run the wire around the door pillar and into the passenger front door sill area. I came in through the rear area because there is a lot more room there to drill and run the wire into the cab.
There are only two wires coming from the actuator. You will look for and use the Violet with Gray Stripe and the Gray with Tan Stripe for the actuator control. They are located in the bundle under the step plate in the front passenger door channel forward of the "Y" in the bundle. These wires will lock with one push and unlock with two pushes of the remote keyfob button just like the doors. It will unlock immediately with the door control switch. You have a 50-50 shot of getting it right! If it's backwards, just reverse the connection before finalizing your connection. Total price is about $10-$15!

I could of made my own bracket, but I spent the same amount of time doing some consulting work and earned more money than the PopLock cost me.
It is a relief knowing my tailgate is locked. I am more concerned about someone stealing my tailgate than I am about what is in the bed.
