What does the term FE mean?

I'm a newbie to this forum and I have seen the term FE used when refering the the engine line. Does FE mean Ford Engine or is there some other meaning?

Now you've done it!! ;-) The myths abound on the meaning of FE and the guy who came up with it is unknown and ain't talking. Do a search on the topic and see how much it's been discussed here. There are several ideas that work well.

What does the term FE mean?

According to the book "how to rebuild your ford big block", fe indeed refers to the intended useage of this engine: in Fords and Edsels (FE). Also, don't forget it's brother, the FT (Ford Trucks).

Fe also happens to be the abbreviation for iron on the periodic element table. And FEs have lots of iron in them. DF, @ his Dad's

What does the term FE mean?

Okay, but "Ford-Edsel" doesn't account for the use of FE motors in Mercs. So, if that explanation were true, it should be "FEM", or perhaps "MEF", or maybe even "EMF" (although that last one is pretty weak) .

What does the term FE mean?

the real question is does it matter. FEs are good engines, that's all that matters, IMO.

One must not forget that the Edsel brand held as much hope for Ford as did the Ford name itself. Literally, Henry had his blood in the Edsel line. I'd offer that Mercury was not as much of a priority then. What about Lincoln? I believe that was before Lincoln was a biggie in the Ford Marketing group's eyes.

Yes but the Mercs didn't get an FE until '61, 4 years after the FE was introduced.
