So much of life in general can be summed up that way, right?

The mention of DVR's and other time shifting methods has me thinking I watch so very little entertainment programming these days----most of it is recorded for the sole reason of FF'ing through the commercials etc.

In fact I'm spending a lot of internet time researching and fine-tuning my computer-based PVR or "personal video recorder" these days. Not sure if its just fun learning new technology or really heading to a sweet spot for recording free entertainment---either way it's sucking up a lot of time!

You might check the settings in your satellite box. My cable box (a Motorola) has a setting that controls the dynamic range (they call it "compression"--which is a bad name) of volume so that the loudest is a little softer and the softest is a little louder. I'm pretty sure my A/V receiver does, too, but I'd rather keep the dynamic range in movies and the like, just not regular TV. Commercials aren't noisy.

As for how everything is hooked up, I have just about everything run through my receiver, since it is an A/V receiver with many, many inputs and outputs (including 5 HDMI in, and 2 HDMI out). The receiver is best at handling sound, so I let it do that. Both the receiver and cable box are set to pass through the picture (no processing)--the new smart TV does that (and does it very well). I do have an optical audio cable run from the TV to the receiver since the TV has access to Netflix.

Oh yeah----its like anything else so many of us do---to echo the words of the wise Tim Taylor "More power!!" We're always tweaking this, adding that, upgrading something or otherwise hot rodding our gear.

It's what we men---and some women too---do in life!
