direct tv remote problem?

I have direct tv with dvr(not hd) and when I turn the tv on after being off for awhile, the remote for the direct tv receiver will not work for about 10 minutes. I can change channels and watch programs I recorded by using the buttons on the receiver, but there is no response from the remote for about 10 minutes. I have put new batteries in the remote and restarted the receiver, and it didn't get better. I tried a google search, but didn't find much relevant info. Thanks for any suggestions!!

This is a new one for me.
Have you tried the support forums for Direct?

I was an installer for Bruister and Associates a Direct TV contracted service company.
However that was 4 years ago and there have been some changes.
I'll call my buddy who trained me and now has his own Direct TV franchise for any info he might have.

What type of TV do you have?

I had similar problems with my Comcast DVR hooked to an LCD TV. Somewhere on the interwebs I stumbled across a solution--put regular, white masking tape over the IR receiver on the satellite box. The problem was that LCDs that are backlit with fluorescent light give off stray IR light, especially when warming up. I ended up putting two layers of tape over the IR eye on my DVR and it works great now. I didn't have problems with my A/V receiver or my Blu-Ray player, nor with my other, newer (and smaller) LCD with a similar DVR attached.

Hope that helps.

Jason

The remote needs to be programmed to work with the receiver.

Follow these steps to program your remote control to operate your receiver:
  1. Press the SYSTEM INFO button on the front panel of your receiver to display the System Information screen.
  2. Press and hold the SAT button on your remote control until the SAT, VCR and AUX buttons light up.
  3. Release the SAT button. It should start to flash.
  4. While the SAT button is flashing, enter any number from 1 - 16.
  5. After entering the number, press the # button on your remote. The SAT light will flash three times.
  6. Press the RECORD button on your remote control. The remote address field on the system info screen should now reflect the code entered in step 4.

His remote does work but only after a delay lasting minutes.

What jorehl posted sounds quite similar.
IR emitter interference from the other devices.

If it just needs to be programmed, can you explain why it works after 10 minutes?

I like jroehl's suggestion too. Never heard of it before, but it sounds very plausible.

No I cannot. But my wife had a similar problem, with the remote only working intermittently. And after following the steps I outlined above, the problem was fixed.
