So I have always had 7.3l turbo powerstroke but I am looking at getting a 1993 f250 ext cab auto with a 73 idi. I haul alot of gooseneck trailers, would a 93 f250 4x4 with a 7.3 IDI have enough hp and torque to do what I need it to? Please help and give reasons to back up what you say.
Turbo or NA IDI? And how heavy are the trailers? They'll both pull whatever you want, in the sense that it will get you from A to B every time, but they aren't gonna be in any hurry (especially if it's NA).
The IDI's are just about bulletproof mechanically though, and parts are a LOT cheaper than on the PSD's. One 7.3 PSD injector costs as much as a set of 8 IDI injectors, for example.
I have a '94 IDI Turbo, and it pulls great. I like the motor better than the '01 F350 PSD I had, better throttle response, less lag. The most I have pulled so far has been a bit over 16k, no problem. The best part? No electronics to cause a no-start issue like the CPS (and everything else) on the PSD.
IDI's have great pulling torque, a N/A idi won't pull as well as your PSD but with a turbo and a crank of the fuel screw it will pull as good if not better. If you're going real heavy shoot for 4.10s. The gear ratios in the early ZFs are pretty high and close but once the load is moving it keeps the rpms where you want them.
the idi will pull anything anywhere, just not set and speed records doing it.
with an aftermarket turbo, turned up fuel, and larger free flowing exhaust, the IDI will be equal to or slightly better than a first gen stock powerstroke.
-the idi's are awesome lil things. but are huge turds in stock trim. if your truck is in good shape, and youll have it a while, I'd absolutely recommend investing in a good pump and injectors. and, of course, a turbo. there are a few companies, or "guys", that have invested a lot of time and energy into making "performance" pumps and injectors for the IDI and are very competent at doing so. guys like R&D and some other forum rats. they offer cams, high fuel rate pumps, and injectors for a fraction of the cost of any of the DI engines out there. all of the above said parts can be had for 1000 bucks, and really wake up the ole IDI's. hell, even fresh bone stock parts make a difference after 20 years of running...
-getting a good turbo setup is key for IDI power, stay away from old style banks (and the like) that have giant cavernous exhaust housings and y pipes that lose all the thermal energy before getting to the turbo, and giant housings keep it from spooling. ATS seems to be the favorite, hypermax offers a modern system that has mixed reviews, but to me it looks like it'd be the best option with short up pipes. blah blah blah....
i would use an "old style" banks non wastegated turbo over a wastegated unit any day of the week.
my 88 will easily make 16 lbs boost all day long. spools instantly, and outruns most vehicles on the road.

I don't know how old we are talkin here....in my experience there are two different banks non WG turbo housings, one is giant, one isn't. im talkin back from 1985...not sure how many of those are floatin around anymore. I don't even think its a "sidewinder" but I don't know enough to confirm any of that.
I started my idi experimentation with a 6.9 that had a banks installed off the showroom floor, way back when, it would only build 7-9 psi with a bunch of other stuff done, and tons of WOT smoke. before fuel mods it would build a few pounds on the highway...but that was it. I got on the phone with banks and got the later version, and built a better y pipe, sings the lovely tune now.
So this 93 f250 7.3 idi hasn't started in 6 months, What should I do to try to get it to start? I plan on taking a battery charger with me to charge the batteries up. Should I take ether with me to give it a little shot?
fresh batteries, and a gallon of diesel. put the fresh batteries in, remove the fuel filter and fill it up if it is not full. check oil.
turn key to on and wait for wait to start light to turn off.
throttle to floor, and turn the key.
