IDI turbo, or PSD?

Well here is my story, Just bought a 94 f250 ext cab, 4x4 7.3 Turbo Diesel. 160,100 miles on it rust free! A "buddy" says if it is a 94 with a turbo its a powerstroke. Well that buddy just removed my boot from his rear. But I like the truck. What is the strong and weak points to this IDI motor vs PSD? Sell it or keep

IDI's are much more reliable and cheaper to work on. Example 1 PS injector runs over $300, you can replace all 8 injectors on an IDI for that. These motors are a little harder to make power than a PS, but it can be done.

Def keep it, I would love a turbo'd 7.3

IDIs make much more reliable HP.

your truck may be an IDI, you can tell by the vin, if the 8th letter in your vin is a K it is an IDI turbo diesel.

It is true, the IDI's are cheaper and easier to work on. Reliability is in the eye of the beholder, though. It depends on how each of them has been maintained. The IDI has more mechanical parts to wear, where the PSD's have sensors and actuators that can fail.

It has been said that the factory turbo IDI made more power than the 1st gen Powerstroke. But was derated on paper to not outshine the incoming engine. I think they were pretty evenly matched. I know I never had any lack of power with the 2 PSD's I've had.

The PSD has a bigger aftermarket following and performance options are nearly unlimited. The PSD has more potential for higher horsepower, and it is easy to come by. There are a few performance mods out there for the IDI. But, you are limited to how much boost they can take because of the higher compression ratio. With the IDI, you just have to get a little more creative to make power.

Ask this question in a PSD forum, and you might get a different answer. Some PSD owners don't give these engines the respect they deserve.

If you were looking at two trucks in equivalent condition, one IDI, one PSD, I'd probably recommend the PSD. But if you already have the IDI, why not keep it? Especially if it's the "last-of-the-breed" factory turbo. A turbocharged IDI is every bit the equal of a stock 1st Gen PSD in the power department. The differences start when you want to soup it up. So much more flexibility and options with the PSD, plus more power potential.
