No TC lockup until warm

I noticed this the other day on my 2000 Excursion. The torque converter will not lock up in overdrive until the temp gauge just begins to enter the normal range regardless of speed. I know how inaccurate and varied the factory gauges are but I don't have the aftermarket gauges installed yet.

Is this by design to try and bring the tranny fluid up to temp faster? Or is this an indication of something wrong?

I've been told the TC doesn't lock out until the tranny temp gets up near 60*. Not sure how "warm" your truck is getting or how long it takes, but this sounds normal to me. I have a Scan Guage on the dash of my truck and my tranny gets up above 60* after about 10 mins of driving....quicker if I let the truck idle for 10-15 mins before I head out.

Thought I just noticed you are in CA so how cold does it get there? My condition only happens in really cold temps....like below freezing as it is here now.

That is exactly why this happens. It is by design and is normal.

Yup - it seems to be tied to the transmission fluid temperature. I've seen it lock somewhere between 55 and 60 degrees F.

I purchased my truck new, meaning I know its complete history. This is normal.

EDIT: I notice Mark commented already (above). He is the ford transmission answer man.

It doesn't get anywhere near that cold here. It's 36 right now (7:45 AM) and the high will be about 55 today. It was about 45 or 50 when I noticed it on the way home late Sunday night.

It happens at almost any temperature. There is a sliding scale of start temp vs. initial lock temp. At warmer temperatures it only needs to warm a few degrees before lock is allowed, so it isn't very noticeable.
