I'm in Michigan, but I'm way up in the Marquette area. I make it to the bridge once and a while tho. Ever been to the St Ignas car show? That sure is a sharp ride, those whites are awesome!
Bazookabert - Your truck looks like it's in great shape; I enjoyed the pics. Looks like you have a great space to work on it over the long winter. From a fellow yooper.
Thank You. As a yooper, you know how long winter can be..... it's horrible! I usually try to do a project or two in the winter to make the time go by and have a fun toy for summer. This winter it was the old ford . I had such a summer inspiration today I even lit the grill up!
Worked on the truck a little too. Changed a bad trans mount and got the front tires on. Still have to get after that radiator tho! I also have to come up with a straight pitman arm. Been striking out with finding one of those :/
I had an unsynchronized 4 speed in mine and put in a 3 speed. I haven't driven it yet, but I know it has to be more enjoyable than the 4 speed was. I had a new driveshaft made because the yoke on the 4 speed was larger and the shaft would have needed to be lengthened to fit. It was easier to get a new one than modify the old.
I'm in the same situation. Haven't driven it so I don't wanna jump the gun and put the 3 speed in it. But..... I don't want to gringing gears everywhere I go!
I prefer the 4 speed crash box. I admit it took a while to figure out clean shifts, but it's kind of like a personal contest each time I drive them. I had to figure it out on my own and older guys would just shrug their shoulders and say "you just gotta double clutch". So I would pump the clutch twice between each shift and it didn't do any good. Trick turned out to be gauging your rpm in gear and predicted rpm after shift all mixed with knowing just when to make the shift. At some point it became second nature like riding a bike. As much grinding as I did on my first model AA, I expected it to look like broken teeth, rounded gears and metal chips in the gearbox when I opened it up, but it looked pristine like it was built the day before. The gears must have been built from kryptonite. They are a very robust transmission. I'm not saying I never miss a shift anymore, especially a downshift, but to me it's part of the the whole old truck thing.
My cardiologist cut out the biscuits and gravy so all I have left is the gear whine. And the red wine......Actually I just got back from the 24 mile round trip to town in my '47 2 ton. It's been a half hour and I can still hear the gear whine.
