Do I have to lift the 390 motor in my 1973 Ford F-100 2wd.? Either the pan gasket or rear main is leaking. BOSSY
Yes, you'll need to jack the motor up.
Remove the fan shroud, drain the oil, unbolt the motor mounts from the perches.
I'm sure some will cringe at this but I used a hydraulic jack under the harmonic balancer to jack the engine up. Place some 2X4's between the mounts and perches. Unbolt the oil pan and drop it down on the crossmember. Get your hand up in the crankcase and unbolt the oil pump and let it drop into the pan then remove the pan.
Now you have access to change both the pan gasket and rear main seal.
BTW, welcome to FTE. Lots of good, knowledgeable people here.
